As a history buff, the languages that fascinate me are the "civilizational" ones (Greek/Hebrew/Latin), and those of our most recent major villains! In searching for one that might be useful in terms of crime or international issues, I obviously wasn't going to learn Arabic or Chinese, so Russian checked all the boxes.
