The Washington Post

Political Geography: Tales from the campaign trail

Arizona

Polls showed Marco Rubio running ahead in Arizona, where the state's some-
what sizable Mormon population as well as Arizona's massive Hispanic population gives him an edge. To win on Tuesday, he needs to capture a large share of the vote in Maricopa County, home to Phoenix, which accounted for two-thirds of the state's 2008 and 2012 GOP primary voters. Arizona Senator John McCain's endorsement could also boost Marco Rubio in Arizona.
↓↘

Donald Trump focused most of his efforts in Arizona's southern counties, including the Maricopa County, where illegal immigration is one of the main issues in local voters' minds.

Polls show Ted Cruz running third to Rubio and Trump. The Texas Senator spent more time in Utah than Arizona.

Utah

↙↓↘

↖↑↗

Utah is announced to be a dual between Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. Rubio focused his efforts in the state's northern regions, including Salt Lake City, where he could benefit from the fiscal conservative vote and more moderate vote. He can also get an edge from Utah's massive Mormon population. Ted Cruz focused most of his time and efforts in Utah's southern counties and hopes to enjoy support from Tea Party voters and hard-core conservative support in Utah to pull up a win there.

Marco Rubio's victory speech in Phoenix, Arizona

Thank you Arizona! Thank you Utah!

I'm proud to see our party as well as the whole conservative movement coalescing together towards our campaign. In Arizona, we won almost 70 % of the Hispanic vote. In Utah, we reached almost 60 % of the vote. Tonight we have won 100 % of all the 107 delegates that were distributed tonight.

Once again, we made a contribution to party unity and to national unity by winning Arizona and Utah. We are the party of all Americans, whether they are Whites, African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, conservatives, liberals or independents.

So I'm glad to be here in Phoenix to send a great message based on this city's name : after two disastrous electoral defeats over the last eight years, our party is about to reborn from the ashes like a phoenix.

My friends, we just learned that five terrorists fighting for ISIS committed a terrorist attack in a metro station in Brussels, Belgium, killing 32 people. Three of the five assailants were killed and let's hope that the two remaining terrorists will be brought to justice soon enough. Let's pray for Belgium, one of our greatest partners and allies. We are Brussels!

We need to stand with our allies, to modernize our military and to boost our troops' readiness and together, we and our allies, will defeat international radical Islamic terrorism, which can only be done if all the American people works together. So I intend, as President of the United States, to bring our country and our people together in order to make sure that we will overcome our challenges for the sake of America's prosperity, security and unity.

Remember, two years ago, Hillary Clinton said that businesses don't create jobs. This is like saying that Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Meg Whitman or Henry Ford didn't create jobs. It shows that Hillary Clinton doesn't understand the economy and doesn't know a lot about how to create jobs. Hillary Clinton's claim is an attack against free enterprise and against the American Dream. We are not the strongest economy in the world because of big government. Free enterprise is a basic element of America's economic prosperity. Businesses create jobs. Thanks to the hard work of the American people, we can promote opportunity. America is strong because of the ingenuity and entrepreneurship and hard work of the American people. I understand this as a son of immigrants and as a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. That's why I have the right economic knowledge and agenda to get America working again and to get this great and beautiful country on the path to permanent prosperity.

We still have work to do. Let's move to Wisconsin, a great example of America's prosperity through industrialization, innovation, free market, free enterprise, lower fiscal burden and smaller government.

Thank you! God bless the United States of America.

On the campaign trail

Terrorist attacks in Brussels

Yesterday, on March 22, five terrorists fighting for ISIS committed a terrorist attack in Brussels, killing 32 people and wounding 340 others. Three of the five ISIS fighters were killed by the Belgian police and the two remaining terrorists are still on the run. All around the world, campaigns of solidarity emerged and adopted the slogan « We are Brussels! »

Donald Trump makes wild threat to 'spill the beans' on Ted Cruz's wife

Donald Trump escalated his feud with Ted Cruz on Twitter Tuesday — but this time he also involved the Texas senator's wife, who hit back on Wednesday at an impromptu press conference.

« Lyin' Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin' Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife! », he tweeted Tuesday evening, just minutes before polls closed in Arizona.

While campaigning in Dane, Wisconsin, Ted Cruz hit back :

« It's not easy to take me off. I don't get angry often. But you mess with my wife, you mess with my kids, then I'll do it every time. Donald you're a sniveling coward. Leave Heidi the hell alone! »

Just after this statement, a reporter asked the Texas Senator whether he would support Donald Trump if the real estate developer were to become the Republican presidential nominee.

« I'm going to beat him for the nomination. », Cruz answered.

« That's not answering the question, Senator. », the reporter replied.

« I am answering the question : Donald Trump will not be the nominee. », claimed the presidential candidate.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker endorses Marco Rubio

During a rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Scott Walker, the Governor of Wisconsin and former Republican presidential candidate, announced that he endorses Florida Senator Marco Rubio. Here are some quotes of Walker's
announcement :

« Now is the time to chose who will be the Republican nominee and the next President of the United States of America. Last summer, I said that if I were to be the Republican nominee, Marco Rubio would be my first choice as my running mate. Well, now that I'm no longer running, I am here to announce you that I endorse Marco Rubio, because right now he is my first choice for President of the United States.

After eight years of the failed Obama-Clinton Administration, Americans are looking for real leadership and a new direction. Marco Rubio is a principled constitutional conservative who understands that power belongs to the states — and to the people — not bureaucrats in Washington. Just like we did in Wisconsin, Marco Rubio is not afraid to challenge the status quo and to stand up against the big government special interests. He has the best experience to grow our economy, to promote free market and free enterprise, to create jobs, to make America prosperous and to restore the American Dream. He has the right foreign policy experience to work with our allies, to defeat radical Islamic terrorism around the world and to fight for democracy. He is the best-positioned candidate to both win the Republican nomination and defeat Hillary Clinton. That’s why I endorse Marco Rubio for President of the United States. »

I sort of feel that if Rubio is the front runner he will not poll as well against Clinton since there will be more Dem efforts to go after him.  Likewise I think Trump and Cruz would poll better than in real life since the anti-GOP energy would now be focused on Rubio and not them.

I sort of feel that if Rubio is the front runner he will not poll as well against Clinton since there will be more Dem efforts to go after him.  Likewise I think Trump and Cruz would poll better than in real life since the anti-GOP energy would now be focused on Rubio and not them.

Yeah, all right, I updated the polls.

-Marco Rubio's presidential campaign broadcasts an ad titled « Real Solution » that narrates Rubio's plan to favor a new rise for America's manufacturing industry without ripping free trade agreements such as NAFTA, the TPP and the TTIP. The ad airs in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania

« Real Solution » advertisement narration :

The right way to keep our manufacturing jobs and to create more of such jobs is not to rip our free trade deals like Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are suggesting.

If we want to relaunch America's manufacturing industry, we have to cut taxes and regulations for manufacturing businesses, which will make them much more competitive and help them to manufacture, to produce, to grow, to expand and to create jobs. That's what Marco Rubio will do as President to make America's economy healthy again.

That way, we can, without any doubt, become much more competitive in the global economy by promoting free trade, which will get us new consumers and reduce the cost of exporting and importing, thus ensuring job creation for the American people.

Manufacturing and trade are both important elements of America's strength and prosperity. One thing doesn't rule out the other. Marco Rubio knows this and that's why tax cuts for manufacturing industry will help us to create jobs in this sector and keep them while encouraging competition in the world economy.

Marco Rubio for a fairer, freer, prosperous and better America.

I'm Marco Rubio and I approve this message.

March 28, 2016
-Foreign policy speech at Appleton War Memorial in Appleton, WI, where Senator Marco Rubio slams Donald Trump for his lack of foreign policy experience :

Donald Trump doesn't know anything about foreign policy and about how to get America safe. The day before the terrorist attacks in Brussels, he called for America's withdrawal from NATO. Donald Trump is adopting a foreign policy agenda that is weaker and more liberal than President Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s. America's withdrawal from NATO would hand a massive victory to Vladimir Putin and to ISIS. It's no wonder that Donald Trump admires Putin, a former KGB agent, a gangster and tyrant who violated Ukraine's and Georgia's territorial integrity. In addition, his controversial comments on Muslims won't solve anything and will encourage terrorist propaganda. That weakness and unilateral surrender from Donald Trump's call to withdraw from NATO indicates his lack of foreign policy experience.

Brussels is the capital of NATO. Brussels just showed an symbol of solidarity and its through solidarity, collaboration with our allies that we will defeat ISIS and all other jihadist groups as well as Putin's expansionist policies. Unlike what Donald Trump claimed, NATO is relevant and effective and accomplished a lot of things over the last few years : we killed Osama Bin Laden and thanks to our collaborations with our allies, we are reducing ISIS' territory in the Middle East. When I'm President, I will finish the job, we will defeat ISIS and bring Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (ISIS' leader) to justice. I will expand our alliances and partnerships and together, we and our allies will defeat terrorism and tyranny. United, we stand, divided we fall.

The Washington Post
Wisconsin primary

Political Geography: Tales from the campaign trail

Ted Cruz hopes that a win in Wisconsin would help him regain momentum against Marco Rubio and prove he can compete with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders in the industrial heartland. He's made more than two dozen campaign stops in the last 2 weeks, mostly in the west and the southeast, heavily Republican parts of the state.

↖↑

Marco Rubio is enjoying an edge in Wisconsin thanks to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's endorsement. The Florida Senator focused most of his efforts on urban regions, especially in eastern Wisconsin, including in the Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay areas, where he is supported by the majority of fiscal conservatives. Rubio's call to cut taxes and regulations for manufacturing businesses and industries in order to help America's manufacturing industry to prosper while promoting free trade could help him to win among working class whites, a group that is likely to influence the results of the Wisconsin primary.

Donald Trump focused most of his efforts on eastern Wisconsin and hopes that his populist message will help him to win among working class whites, a group that is likely to influence the results of the primary in this industrial heartland.

Marco Rubio's victory speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Thank you Wisconsin!

These are amazing results that will lead us to the finish line, get us to 1237 delegates and to the nomination.

Wisconsin is the birthplace of the Republican Party. Our party was born in 1854 in Ripon, Wisconsin. Meeting at a school house in Ripon on February 28, 1854, some 30 opponents of the Kansas-Nebraska Act called for the organization of a new political party to link their cause with the Declaration of Independence. The group also took a leading role in the creation of the Republican Party in many northern states during the summer of 1854. While conservatives and many moderates were content merely to call for the restoration of the Missouri Compromise or a prohibition of slavery extension, the group insisted that no further political compromise with slavery was possible. The February 1854 meeting was the first political meeting of the group that would become the Republican Party.

Tonight, Wisconsin, the birthplace of the Republican Party, has become the place where this great and diverse party is reemerging. The Republican Party is back. We will promote and defend all the values that made America great and prosperous : social conservatism, free market, free enterprise, fiscal conservatism and energy independence. We will promote all the policies that made America safe : stronger military and stronger alliances.

By defending these values, we will win in November.

Tonight was a bad night for Hillary Clinton. It was a bad night in the Democratic primary, and it was an even worse night for her in the Republican primary. We are winning because we are uniting the Republican Party. Of the 17 candidates who started this race, a terrific, talented, dynamic field, seven have now endorsed my campaign: George Pataki, Bobby Jindal, Lindsey Graham, Rick Santorum, Jeb Bush, John Kasich, and the Governor of the great state of Wisconsin Scott Walker. Thank you, Scott!

Tonight is about unity and hope. Young people in America once again have hope that we will create jobs here in America. By repealing Obamacare, reining in the federal regulators that are killing small businesses, cutting taxes on manufacturing companies, passing a flat tax, abolishing the IRS, promoting energy independence, promoting free trade, reforming our education system and balancing our budget, we will unleash incredible and massive economic growth that will bring America to a brighter future through permanent economic prosperity, full employment and restoration of the American Dream here on the land of opportunity.

So let me just say, Secretary Clinton, get ready, here we come.

Thank you my friends, God bless you all and God bless the United States of America.

On the campaign trail

Donald Trump hits Ted Cruz on New York values

On April 6, during a rally in Bethpage, New York, Donald Trump took on Ted Cruz for criticizing him for embracing « New York values ». Here are some passages of his attacks :

« You know Lyin' Ted Cruz came today and couldn't bring a hundred people. Do you remember during the debate, when he started lecturing me on New York values like we're no good? I looked at him and started talking about our incredible police, our incredible firefighters during the 9/11 attacks. We all know people who died and I've got this guy standing over there looking at me and talking to me about New York values with scorn on his face, with hatred of New York. So folks, I think you can forget about him. »

Then here's how the crowd of about 10 000 supporters responded : « Lyin' Ted, Lyin' Ted, Lyin' Ted ».

Donald Trump hits Marco Rubio on Wall Street

Yesterday, Donald Trump attacked Marco Rubio by accusing him of being the candidate of Wall Street.

« Little Marco is supported by the Wall Street money. I don't need such money because I'm self funding, so I don't take any money from anybody. We're going to change Washington, believe me. And Under my presidency, Washington will act in the interests of all the American people. », the real estate mogul said.

New endorsements

Senator Marco Rubio received endorsements from New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and from South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds.

Ahead of the New York Republican primary, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani remained neutral since he's a close friend to Donald Trump but still has his tendency of supporting foreign policy experienced candidates and hawkish Republicans like Rubio.
