http://buchanan.org/blog/secession-solution-cultural-war-126571

[quote]Indeed, the nationalization of decision-making, the imposition of one-size-fits-all solutions to social problems, the court orders emanating from the ideology of judges — to which there is no appeal — that is behind the culture wars that may yet bring an end to this experiment in democratic rule.

Those factors are also among the primary causes of the fever of secessionism that is spreading all across Europe, and is now visible here.

A new federalism — a devolution of power and resources away from Washington and back to states, cities, towns and citizens, to let them resolve their problems their own way and according to their own principles — may be the price of retention of the American Union. Let California be California; let red state America be red state America

I will say that I can get behind Buchanan's idea of a new federalism, but not for the reasons and grievances that he said.

How is he going to force the blue states to keep subsidizing red states? Or is the plan to just let them continue to become 3rd world hellholes?

i think buchanan must have REALLY conflicted thoughts about trump.

imagine you are an intellecutal, fighting all your life for your idea and then a clown comes around, making stupid points, creating a laughingstock out of your worldview and wins everything.

You know that a lot of the poorest people in "red states" - many of them Black, especially in the South - are loyal Democrats, right?  Are you just going to throw them a big " YOU!" all in the name of partisan bickering?

Confederation is a terrible idea, and would likely result in interstate tensions, disputes, and possibly conflicts breaking out. States like West Virginia and Vermont are probably not going to survive as independent entities.

I'm not the one advocating secession. My gut says it's coming, though. And when it does, I'm certainly not going to support ongoing transfer payments to oppressive theocracies, which they'd hand off to corporate conspirators instead of using for social services. I publicly support and will do everything I can to assist refugees from the Confederacy - as long as there's no public record of those refugees ever having been registered Republicans, of course. We wouldn't want to be letting in a bunch of people with lots of problems, who are probably criminals and rapists who hate freedom and democracy.

He's like the older cousin of the boomers, the last generation before our cultural cancer began to spread.

No, Uncle Pat was only the most famous figure on the right to openly identify that one was going on. The left started the culture wars with their militant secularism and nihilism.

To be fair, California/Oregon/Washington Democrats have suggested the same thing.

I think Pat Buchanan represents the mood and views of the Republican base better than almost every other columnist out there.  If he's a nazi, then so are most Republicans.

This is a very popular position on the alt-right. They are very big on California declaring independence. Those who envision a "white ethnostate" also think New York is lost and will have to become a separate polity of some form. It's obviously mostly LARPing but it's interesting to think about.

If California (and all the liberal coastal states) broke away, they would take most of the rich people but they would also take most of the immigrants. So you would be left with a Democratic States of America that basically looked like Dubai with a bunch of rich White people and millions of indentured immigrants and a Republican States of America which would be overall poorer but actually have much more equitable distribution of wealth, sort of like Portugal or Bulgaria.

Secession would be a disaster for some states, because some do not have the resources to sustain being independent. It's even hard for new counties to even be formed because of the resources it takes (same with incorporated cities).

Secession is treason. The debate was settled in 1865.

Secession without approval of the federal government.

He literally stated that Nazi Germany was an innocent victim of US imperialism. Partisanship is a hell of a drug.
