Trump skipping White House Correspondents Dinner

Wow. I genuinely thought he had the guts to go. Won't make that mistake again.

They should just get Alec Baldwin in character in his place. Or maybe a cardboard cutout. Maybe Hillary Clinton. What would annoy him most?

I think the reason he's skipping can be summed up in one picture:



He had no issue rubbing shoulders with the Washington media elite six years ago (as a guest of the Washington Post, mind you). He had no problem that it was a crowd largely hostile to his politics. This is his opportunity to take those sons of Bs to town on his own turf, but he won't.

[Crumpets]

Politically, Trump had everything to gain and nothing to lose by attending.  Despite all his readily apparent faults, it would be fairly easy for the comedian roasting him to go too far, especially in the eyes of his supporters.  Despite displaying an obvious thin skin in 2011, he still managed to show up in 2015 (and maybe a few other times).  However, as President, he would be expected to do more than attend and self-deprecating comedy is not Trump's forte. If he spoke at the WHCA dinner, he'd show himself to be the least effect president at stand-up comedy since FDR.

My mom has a theory about this that he's skipping the dinner to personally fly somewhere and kill some supervillain to try to out-do Obama in 2011.
