Back this time of year in 2009, the media slime were debating who the true leader of the Republican Party was, due to the absence of any clear unifying figure. Rush Limbaugh? George W. Bush? Michael Steele?

Example pieces:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=101430572

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/white-house/is-rush-limbaugh-the-new-face.html

It turned out that the true leader of the Republican Party would actually be Donald Trump.

So, analogizing this to the present situation, who is the de facto leader of the Democratic Party now?

I'd argue that the leader of the Republican Party from 2009-2011 was Sarah Palin.  For the first half of Obama's second term, the party was so divided that it was practically leaderless between the Ryan faction of the GOP and the Cruz faction of the GOP.

The Democratic Party now is kind of in a similar situation, but I think the Sanders/Warren wing is slowly taking over.  I don't believe it has a single "leader" though.

It doesn't have a single glorious leader, and that's a good thing. The biggest voices in the party ATM are probably Obama, Schumer, Warren, and Sanders.

I don't really see it as Trump. He seems more like a puppet to Bannon, same way Cheney led the Bush years.

As for 2009-2016, Addison "Let's Make Obama a One-termer" McConnell with all his obstructions was the obvious leader.

-No; that makes no sense. Bannon was hired in August 2016. Trump's ideas were all formulated well before that (cf., the primary debates).

McConnell had something of a behind-the-scenes role, though you could make the argument he was the most effectual leader in the party.

Yes, but he ways a ton of influence over Democratic voters and policy of the party. But when you get down to it, there is no leader. In the way I interpret the role, he is the de-facto leader, I suppose.

That is one of the things I like about our political system here: unlike the UK and countries with parliaments, if you belong to a party that is represented by an unpopular leader, you don't have to be stuck with them for four or five years if they aren't in government.

Obama is part of the reason Democrats hold the lowest number of offices since the 1920s, so I don't see why he should carry the proverbial torch.
