I spent a whole month making this map using data from this website, and it's finally completed. Shades are in increments of 1%; darker shades signify more support and vice-versa. Feel free to analyze!

Wow, this obviously took a lot of work. Does anyone know why Johnson was so strong in eastern North Dakota?

Looking at 08/12 maps, it looks like there's considerable overlap between those counties and Obama's strongest counties (excluding the strongly Nat-Am ones).

Looks similar to much of Idaho and McMullin; there, it appears that an overwhelming chunk of McMullin's support actually came from Obama's column rather than Romney's.

Very cool- thanks for this! This is the kind of stuff that brings people to this forum.

Madison County, ID (Rexburg/BYU-Idaho)

2012: Romney 93%, Obama 6%
2016: Trump 57%, McMullin 30%, Clinton 8%, Johnson 4%

Thank you so much. I might do another one of these. Any suggestions?

I hope you do! Personally, I've always wanted to see a Schmitz '72 map, if you're taking requests.

Sounds like a plan. I'll have it finished by the end of April or earlier.

Awesome, dude! Thanks again.

Also, don't be discouraged if your maps don't get a lot of replies sometimes. I'm sure there are people like me lurking and appreciating the work, even if I'm too lazy to log in and say so sometimes. Wink

And there were many Obama-Romney-McMullin voters also Smiley

Considering he's from NM, it's no surprise he had good strengths there.

However I'm curious about Oklahoma, how did he do well there?

Oklahoma ranks #2 in the nation for overall freedom; add that to the fact that Gary Johnson was the first third party candidate on the ballot Oklahoma since 2000, and it isn't really surprising that he did well.

What surprises me is how good Johnson did in the Rust Belt states. How did he do so well in states like Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan?

That clashes slightly with my perceptions of Oklahoma. Would you happen to have a link to this ranking?

I think the bolded is the main reason.  No Stein on the ballot in Oklahoma, nor any other 3rd party options.  So some of the people who might have otherwise preferred to vote Stein or McMullin or someone else ended up voting Johnson instead.

Huh

Examples like this was what I was referring to, where Trump's percentage of the vote was stable for the most part compared to Romney's, while Clinton's dropped by an amount that was inversely comparable to (the majority of) the share that third-party percentages grew by in 2016.

"Freedom" is super subjective and this is a really, really biased source. One of the sources is "...Vice President of Policy and Research at the Charles Koch Institute and Charles Koch Foundation." I mean, come on.

That being said, the map looks awesome. For maps like these, I like seeing the counties without borders, it really shows how contiguous all the counties are. Can I ask how you made this (what program you used)?

For the map, I found a blank map (SVG file) on Wikimedia Commons (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/Usa_counties_large.svg). To color it in, I used Inkscape.

Nice map! I'd love to see maps of Stein and McMullin too.

Johnson was born in North Dakota, but he moved at a young age. Also, he was born in Minot, not eastern ND.

I've made a new map (one that was requested by Chinggis). You can find the thread here:
