What is the difference between a cult and a religion?

As far as I can tell, a Cult is bull$%#t created by one person who is usually looking to exploit the female members of his cult sexually and take the members money. That person knows it's bull$%#t.

In a religion, that dude's dead.

When I think of cult, I always think of a schwammi and robes.

Neither has an official, well-defined meaning. There does seem to be a sociological conception of a cult as an authoritarian insular group. http://people.howstuffworks.com/cult1.htm

They overlap many times, but there are plenty of differences.

How is Hinduism a cult?

How is Hinduism a cult?

I'm not particularly prone to consideration of polytheistic perpsectives, but I'll make an allowance for it as an "organic religion".

IMO Nichiren Buddhism is fiscally a cult but socially a religion. Or is it the other way around?

I don't think Traditional African or Traditional Chinese qualify as cults either.

Ancient mythologies that, for the most part, are no longer followed don't qualify as cults either.

Christianity as a whole is not a cult, but it comes in several variants that qualify as cults.

I remember hearing Bah'ii may qualify, but I don't know much about them.

Rastafarianism, at its core, is certainly a cult.

Islam isn't a cult, but again, some variants may qualify.

I don't know for sure, but....

A religion is a sect or belief system that one can voluntarily withdraw from (without major repercussions).  A cult is similar....the difference (IMHO) is that in a cult, you cannot withdraw from the particular sect without the powers-that-be seeking to destroy your life (see Scientology).  Just my opinion.

Weird fact about me....in high school (back in 1999), one of my social studies teachers basically said that Christianity is evil.  I remember her words to this day...."Roman Catholicism is a cult".  She went on to sing the praises of Islam....this was in a class that I had to take, and pass, in order to graduate.  Sad
