I don't know for sure, but....

A religion is a sect or belief system that one can voluntarily withdraw from (without major repercussions).  A cult is similar....the difference (IMHO) is that in a cult, you cannot withdraw from the particular sect without the powers-that-be seeking to destroy your life (see Scientology).  Just my opinion.

Weird fact about me....in high school (back in 1999), one of my social studies teachers basically said that Christianity is evil.  I remember her words to this day...."Roman Catholicism is a cult".  She went on to sing the praises of Islam....this was in a class that I had to take, and pass, in order to graduate.  Sad
