2004 was the first election I actually cared about and knew the importance of.

I still remember going to bed that night after 1 AM so disappointed.

Nothing like the day of numbness after election night 2016 though.

Yea, I was 15 back in 2004 and I remember that election very well. It was the first election I remember as well. I remember John Edwards speaking at around 1 am saying that they were behind in Ohio by around 150,000 votes. But that there was supposedly a few hundred thousand Democratic leaning absentee ballots not counted. That gave me a bit of hope as the night wore on. I went to bed at 2:30 am and knew things were bleak. I was able to skip school the next day and found out that Bush had carried Ohio and had won the election when I woke up the next day.

2004. I remember going door to door in the new suburbs that were booming in Hendricks County at the time with my dad and registering new GOP voters for Mitch Daniels. I also remember watching the returns at a local restaurant.

Yeah I was about that age too. But I had to go to school the next day and had to hear people say things "Yeah good now fags can't get married!" and "Dude but he kicked the sh**t out of Iraq!".

Ugh. It was bad.

2004.

I remember Dad insisting Kerry would win because of Iraq, while I was sure Bush would win because he looked more attractive even if he sounded like an idiot.

I remember Nevada going back and forth between Kerry and Bush too.

But 2008 was the first that I really understood.

I don't recall the 1972 election (I was 6); I don't recall reading the name McGovern until years later. I followed the 1976 election; my 5th grade class (in Macomb County, MI around the time of the busing crisis) voted 367-164 Ford (my vote was for Carter however). I remember waking up November 3rd to my mom telling me Carter had won. The first election night I watched was 1980; I remember my mom shaking her head in dismay.

2008; I was too young to remember 2004 and earlier

2000.  I remember wanting Al Gore to win because his name sounded cooler.
That's hilarious.

Definitely 1984 - Geraldine Ferraro on the ticket with Mondale. Gary Hart Mk I. Reagan's landslide win. I was 10.

2008. I was 8 at the time and my dad let me stay up late to watch the results. I didn't understand what was going on really I just remember my dad was really happy. I do remember in the mock-election in my 3rd grade class I voted for McCain though cause that's who my teacher said she was voting for. Tongue

Also the year before in 2nd grade I got in trouble for saying Bush was the worst President ever. I was just parroting my dad basically.

I remember 2000 only for the mock election my 2nd grade class had (I was seven and a half at the time and I voted for Gore), the recount, and my dad being pissed at the end result. I don't remember the election night itself. 2004 was the first in where I actually remember watching  the results come in, but had to go to bed before a winner was decided. I found out the next morning that Bush had been re elected. Election night 2008, I stayed up all the way through Obama's acceptance speech and this was also the case in 2012 (the first election I voted in).

2002 Bundestag election, when I was 10 years old.

As for U.S. elections: What got me more interested in American politics was Obama's election in 2008, because I thought he was a very skilful campaigner, and it was also quite a sensation that a black man was elected POTUS. So in 2012, I watched the results of a U.S. presidential election for the first time.

2008. We 'voted' in school and I voted McCain because that's who my parents supported. My sister wanted Obama to win because his name was funny.

2016, but I'm not a teenager, I just didn't follow politics before 2015 (so I know that Obama won in 2012, for example, I just didn't watch and hence didn't find out until the day after).

I was born in '55, so I don't remember '56, and only have the vaguest memories of '60, '64 or '68.
I don't remember if I remember election night '72 or '76, but '76 was the first time that I voted in a POTUS election ('74 was the first time that I voted). As for election nights, I vaguely remember '80 and  '88. Since 1996 I have been paying close attention. I get burned out and follow politics less in odd years, but (unfortunately) have been paying too much attention this year.

2008, it was really a great night for me. I don't think any election result can make me as happy as that night did.

Nothing like the day of numbness after election night 2016 though.

1992.  I remember watching TV, and thinking, "Clinton is going to win by a landslide".

2004, although I didn't really know what was going on until 2008.
