Just wondering how many of us had every actually been to the place we spend so much time talking about.

My answer is "yes".  I've actually lived in D.C. for about 14 months.

Yep.  I took the tour of the White House, Capitol building, Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson Memorials when I was but a wee lass.  For some reason the Jefferson Memorial was my favorite, and I kept pestering my dad to take us there until he finally did.  I can't remember who was president at the time though.  I didn't meet them.  Tongue

I also went back to tour American University and George Washington University when I was applying for colleges.

Yes. Saw all there is to see in and around the Mall, and took the tour of the Capitol.

Yeah, and yes, government towns often have this dead feel to them.

I hope we'll make distinction between "government town" such as Washington of Brasila, that were build for this very purpouse, and actual old cities that became capitals.

Indeed. Excellent point. London ain't dead. The DC metro area also has this awful urban sprawl that only LA surpasses in suckdom.  When driving from  Hudson to visit my long dead Dunn surnamed ancestors in Mathews County, VA, getting around NYC and Philly and Baltimore was a breeze. Getting around DC was hell. I seemed to have been stuck, stop light by stop light, in eastern Prince George County, and Charles County, MD forever, shopping center, after shopping center.  Just hideous.

Hell, Warsaw isn't dead... well, it used to be after 1944, but we rebuild everything Smiley

As of constructed capitals, Brasila is a very interesting example of "souless" area, because it's just so artificial. While I admire Niemeyer's architectural works, the town planning was dreadful. For example, in first years, you had an apartment building and nothing for like 5 kilometers, just to give an impression of "urban area". Some says its depressing.

But from political/economic point, building a new capital in the interior was a sound idea. Before that  it was pretty much just the coast and it took long time to actually build a road from the north to the south, with shipping doing most of transport.

Yes, I went there for the first time last December.

Glad I got to see the White House while a decent person still lived there.

Yes, I just popped down for brunch this morning!  I'm in the District about three times a week, I'd estimate.

Yeah, and yes, government towns often have this dead feel to them.

To be fair, you were passing through some of the worst-planned parts of the DC area (PG in general is allergic to density for reasons I don't quite understand), although I'll concede in general there's a lot of annoying generic sprawl.

Yes, unfortunately. It is, by far, my least favorite major city in the United States, setting aside dead urban cores like Detroit or St. Louis. I hope that I never need to move there for the sake of my career or family.

I take it you've never been to Las Vegas.

Many times. Most recently in Dec to attend an environmental conference on water quality in the Midwest.

Yes, in mid-2014. Touched the grass on the White House lawn. Security there was weak. Wouldn't want to live anywhere near there, despite its obvious opulence.

Yes, in March 2009. Sadly, President Obama was meeting with the Australian leader or whoever and the White House was closed off.
