Opinion of the phrase "both sides do it"

Reminds me of a common argument in the Eastern Bloc during Cold War: "but in American you're beating up Negroes".

It's such an easy defense (and everyone of us has done it I would imagine), not a good one obviously, but it sure is easy.

Usually HP.  Both sides certainly don't do it to the same extent.

It's even worse when it's not even done to be partisan, just to seem "fair."

     There's a reason why hardly anyone pushes their political allies to be better; there's little value to cleaning house and being more ethical when your opponents will do nothing of the sort.
