Is he aware that "poor people" are being covered by Medicaid?

iPhones are too expensive for me even in good times. They really are expensive.

He may not even realize that smart phones are available for about $50 even without a contract. That is roughly three new-release compact discs or DVDs, two fifths of whiskey, seven six-packs of  beer worth drinking...

Trump economics: raise prices and cut wages, and make medical care so expensive that people chose to do without it and die.

Donald Trump is our President. I am not proud to be an American anymore.

Jason Chaffetz has probably never been around a poor person in his entire life.

Some of them are. Some are not.  But, this is beside the point. He didn't specify poor people. But he seems to not take seriously at all the level of spending required for people to pay for insurance, deductibles and co-pay.

iPhones are too expensive for me even in good times. They really are expensive.

I got my first cell phone when I was about 18 years old in 2006. It was a flip phone. I used it for four years. In 2010, I got a new flip phone that I used another four years. After that, I got a cheap little "smart phone" and for Christmas 2015, my sister gave me her I-Phone 4 after she got a newer one.

I use an I-Phone 4 and people say it's a "dinosaur". I'm 28 years old and only owned four cell phones in 10 years. It amazes me the way these young people go out and buy a new phone willy-nilly. To me, that's a month of rent.

Chaffetz is right. Too many people buy the newest I-Phone simply because it is new. The waste is deplorable.

It's true though. He's not saying that you can buy healthcare if you don't buy the newest iPhone, he is saying that individuals are responsible for what they do with the limited resources they have.

Elitism at its worst.  Chaffetz is a Caviar Conservative, which is much worse than a Latte Liberal, because a Caviar Conservative's voting record matches his class warfare.

How would either of you suggest that a family earning less than 200% of the poverty line budget for unsubsidized health insurance? (Or, in the absence of insurance, budget for routine primary care, prevention, and, if needed, emergency or chronic care.)
I was simply saying that it is not particularly financially responsible for most poor people to buy new iPhones. I'm sure I'm not the only person who's stood behind someone at the checkout who pays with EBT while holding a new $800 phone. Yeah, perhaps Chaffetz' comment was somewhat mean and irrelevant, but it's not untrue.

Of course, I disagree with Chaffetz and the Ryan wing of the GOP on the actual substance.

Describing health care spending as a personal "investment" ought to be grounds for official censure.

Health care cannot be compared to a consumer product as an iPhone, because it is not in the same class of goods, unless Chaffetz is comparing Steve Jobs' invention as the equivalent of the discovery of medicine at least 9,000 years ago. In that case, let's tear down the Lincoln Memorial and replace it with the Steve Jobs Memorial, because the man has contributed more to human history than any other American, living or dead. /s

He doesn't even know the difference between a smart phone sold at a store with "dollar" in its name and an iPhone.

His fundamental sentiment isn’t wrong, he just said it in the most wildly stupid and irresponsible way possible.

The price of one iPhone would surely guarantee you a proper healthcare!
