I heard a rumor that this selection was supposed to be some sort of jab at Romney.

Hopefully all works out. We need them as an ally against our true enemies. If we stop antagonizing Russia and end our association with the criminals in NATO we could have a new "special relationship".

fun thing is that trump has dissed huntsman in the past cause of surrendering US interests to the chinese...and now the former ambassador to trump's biggest foe....becomes the US ambassador to Trump's greatest friend.

Huntsman is pretty uncontreversial, so maybe he just didn't want to waste more political capital on another confirmation fight.

However, I still find this pick odd because of the things you pointed out.

Considering how terrible this appointment could have wound up, Huntsman is a solid choice.

What I think is strange is this takes Huntsman out of the running for the Senate in 2018. More power to McMullin?

Why anyone would want to be Trump's Ambassador to Russia, other than a career foreign service officer - who wouldn't usually have a chance at what normally is a plum job - is beyond me. Thanks to Trump's Russian connections, it's literally a job you're doomed to fail at, no matter what happens.

-Huntsman's opinions regarding Russia are a cipher, as far as I can tell, though his connections are not even remotely encouraging regarding this.

Meh, a rare example of a good personnel decision by the Trumpster. A Cabinet position for him would have been better though to improve the quality of this generally mediocre Cabinet.

The confirmation hearings for any Trump nominee for ambassador to Russia inevitably have the potential to turn into a circus.  I assume that's at least partly why Trump picked an experienced politico for the job.

I think this makes sense, however I question Huntsman's motives and ideals now that he is working for trump. I wonder if they will butt heads at all.
