How much would you feel comfortable spending at dinner out?

No special occasion involved, just imagine you wanted to go and sit down in a restaurant to be served on a Tuesday-Thursday night.  Include alcohol (if applicable) to your tab, but do not include tip (to account for all of our European posters).  Imagine you're only paying for yourself in this situation.

If you want, give us some more detail on where you'd go/what you'd eat.

I try to keep it under $20 unless it is a special occasion or I'm paying for someone else. I don't drink, so that's usually pretty easy.

Ideally under $10, but if I'm eating inside than usually I'm at a place where I'm paying about $15. 90% of food under ten bucks is fast food.

If it's one drink and a meal, it'll usually be somewhere in the teens. When I was young and foolish, a trip to Buffalo Wild Wings might run above $20. The greatest likelihood of staying under $10 is at Blaze pizza, or some variety of Asian takeout.

My one regret about living in the Deep South is the unavailability of good Asian takeout/delivery.  All we get is this bad "Super Asian China Buffet" crap.

I'd say we make up for it by generally having better Mexican food than the Midwest/Northeast though.

LOL, I'm older than you and still solidly in the above $20 camp RE: BWW.  My (and my friends') bar tab(s) are pretty embarrassing there.

As for the OP, maybe like $50 for just me?  Though I can't imagine I'd be at a place where the meals cost that much by myself, LOL.

In Starkville I can head out during the weak and get a nice steak, potatoes, vegetable, caesar salad, and either 2 glasses of wine or a cocktail for about $40 before tip

I have no idea how the quality runs, but there's an--as far as I can tell--authentic Mexican section of Detroit, so we are probably on par in that regard.

Less than $15, used to be less than $10 but prices have jacked up so much as of late.

$20-40 if on a date.

Inner-city Mexican in Detroit is probably more "authentic" than what we have in Mississippi, but the vast majority of what Americans call "Mexican food" is actually Tex-Mex cuisine which is most popular in the Rio Grande region and northern Mexico.

As far as I can tell, Tex-Mex is just as "authentic" as traditional Mexican cuisine (its been around for centuries) but its pretty different than the cuisine found in the more populated areas of central and southern Mexican + the Yucatan.

Just for myself, no special occasion? I see absolutely no good reason to go over $20.

Back when B-Dubs used to sell their meals in increments of 5 instead of 4, on occasion is purchase a 20-piece with a root beer. Now I go there probably exclusively on Thursdays, and the cheapest drink can keep you at around $16 pre-tip. My cost consideration was based on "just dinner", as opposed to "going out", which I don't do frequently.

It depends a lot on my interests and location. For example I was at a hotel last week and got dinner for myself. I wasn't too hungry so a quesadilla and a good draft beer put me just over $20 with tax and tip. If I want a real sit down dinner with some good wine by the glass I might spend $50. I'm not a big eater so I tend not to get more than a salad and entree.

Around $20 is a good rule of thumb, but since it's so rare for me to eat at a restaurant proper I don't really need to watch myself too closely. More than $30 would definitely feel wrong though.

Why is food so much more expensive in Australia?  Do y'all import most of it?

If I go out with my girlfriend tonight, we would be lucky to get change from $100 from a standard restaurant.

Throw in a bottle of wine, and it's $140.

If we go to the Rockpool, it's probably $180 per person with wine.

https://www.crownperth.com.au/getmedia/b5df2cd1-d662-48c8-804a-c34c4676d4c0/Crown-Perth-Restaurants-Premium-Rockpool-Bar-And-Grill-Main-Menu.pdf.aspx

I go there once a year. Very expensive, but very nice, and the service is extremely good.

In Australia, the staff's wages are in the meals, so we do not tip.
