What if every state in the U.S. had to have its name changed? Try to give a short explanation for the name.

I'll start:
Massachusetts = Plymouth (old colony)
Rhode Island = Providence [Plantations] (second part of the state's full name)
Connecticut = New Haven (old colony)
Vermont = Champlain (the lake)
New Hampshire = Merrimack (the Merrimack River flows through major population centers)
Maine = New Ireland (abortive colony the British tried to start during the Revolution and War of 1812)
New York = New Amsterdam (former name under Dutch rule)

For Washington:
- Cascadia (Cascades)
- Salisha (general name for many related native groups centered on the state)
- Tahoma (name for Mount Rainier in several native languages)
- Tookwhehlteed (Lushootseed word for "a large open space," and the name of one of the villages was formerly located in what is now Seattle, thus combining both urban and rural elements - also fun to hear people try to pronounce)
- Wimahl (Chinook word for the Columbia River)
- Nch’i-Wàna (Sahaptin word for the Columbia River, another one I'd like to hear people try to say casually)
- x̌ʷə́lč (Lushootseed word for Puget Sound and surrounding waterways, and the one I would most want to hear people try to say)

The last option is clearly the best. We can call it Xwelc if we're lazy. Postal abbreviation XW.
