District 4 Voting Booth
«
on:
April 27, 2004, 04:42:21 pm »
Since the deadline has passed and M has not declared his candidacy there is only 1 choice you can make. ONLY members of District 4 can vote and only citizens that were eligable to vote the first time. Here is the balot:
Harry (D-MI)
There is no Write In voting here. Basically when Harry votes for himself he wins. But to make it official here it is. ENJOY!

"Therefore, the Court gives M until 5:00 P.M. Tuesday to formally announce his decision. A by-election to fill the vacancy will be held on Thursday and Friday. If no such declaration is made, this Court finds Harry to rightfully be the Senator."

This is such bull sh**t and you all know it.
5:00 pm Tuesday is so much time to give someone to file their candidacy. This just proves how unfair some of the people on this forum are.

I really hope this stupid Senate "race" doesn't permanently damage the forum. Guys, it is one Senate seat, with no real power. Let's move on to the Governor's races, Presidential election, and Senate re-election campaigns, all within the next two months. And there is a Senate run-off this weekend!
No-one in this controversy acted particularly well. The Republicans knew they were inviting controversy by writing-in a candidate they never expected to take the seat. The Democrats knew they would look partisan by rushing the case through the Supreme Court. And the Progressives looked bad by attacking the SC nominees.
But let's get past it....the forum is about elections and not governing, so what happens in past elections doesn't really matter.

Yes, clearly.
But the Republicans contributed to making it a sham by voting for a candidate they knew wouldn't take the seat. If they had just written-in an actual active forum member, they would have the seat now. None of the Democrats or Progressives had a problem with StevenNick's write-in campaign, for example.

There were hardly any Reps (or others in that area). And Supersoulty said that he made a mistake, confusing 2 TX Reps with each other. Agcat is still active on the other boards.

Uh...HELLO...
One thing that would have pleased me is to have had a new election where others could have run. They would've had to declare their candidacies, just like the last time. The whole issue surrounding "write-ins" has been cleared up now, so there would've been no confusion.
Sure, you lot gave us a new election...with one canidate and no alternatives... That was completely unfair on purpose and you damn well know it.
You all are a bunch of rotten a**holes and if I leave this forum it's because of you, miami, Harry, Al, and Shapeshifter. I just want you to know that.
GWBfan the decision was not in the best interest of the forum but its over now. IMO, we should have known better than to allow the Supreme Court decide elections (in real life too, but thats another issue...). This can be solved in the future by a constitutional amendment striking the clause where it says the Supreme Court steps in during election disputes. We can do this simply by amending Demrepdan's constitution, which deals mostly with regulation of elections anyway. As Edmund Burke founder of modern conservatism would say, there is no need to tear down the entire house just because you don't like the paint on the wall. There is no need to throw away months of work when there is strong support for substantive reforms within the system.

That's just not good enough. I won't stop with this. For as long as I stay here in this forum, this is what I'll mainly be talking about. You all (not you, the others I listed above) screwed around with the first election, and with the followup election, and now I'm going to continue whining about it. You may not like it, and I'm sorry if I start to annoy anyone, but that's what I'm going to do.

the decision was absurd I understand them throwing out M's candidicy But a new "election" with only Harry so he automatically wins, why hold an "election" why didn't they just declare him senator. Do you actually agree with this decision. If this is how these elections are going to work I might leave myself. How do we know the supreme court will find a way to make sure Nym is reelected, after this sham of an election who knows what they may do.
THE SUPREME COURT IS A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can whine all you want, but why not work towards a constructive solution? The constitutional amendment I proposed completely solves your problem. Other secret deals, whatever, there is no way you can prevent it. You won't accomplish anything just by whining. I don't know how anyone "screwed" with the presidential election though.
