My ideology (if we can encapsulate it in a simple statement) would be that I trust government more often than not, but not without ambivalence.

Capitalist, feminist, zionist, globalist, institutionalist, statist, technocrat, progressive, incrementalist, contrarian, sceptical interventionist, bleeding heart catholic liberal - and more republican (in the original definition of the word) than pure democrat (the same).

haven't found a fitting single word for those beliefs......guess i am also a contrarian to myself.

Typical American-style social democrat tearfully flipping through pictures of the DNC and trying to force myself not to drunkenly text my ungrateful ex Tony Blair at 2 am with a "hey u up?"

My ideology is a mix between Green politics and Social Democracy. Basically, I'd fit with most left-wing Green parties that emphasize social justice, environmentalism, pacifism, tolerance, fair trade, and so on. That's why my favorite party in the world is the "GreenLeft" party in the Netherlands.

Pot-smoking hippie minus the pot

Or, "a moderate populist leftist who supports unions more than anything else and has a lot of distrust in the free market. Extremely non-interventionist (but not isolationist either). Thinks the social leftists are going a bit too far with their polyamory and anti-white stuff."

Freedom-loving social democrat, environmental protectionist and a preference for natives on social issues (or those who already paid into a country's welfare system) over foreigners. Strong advocate of law-and-order.

Civil libertarian social democrat.  Pro-social justice, anti-SJW and a staunch opponent of political correctness.  Foreign policy dove.  I'm generally skeptical of "big" things, whether it's government or business and I basically take a leave-me-the-hell-alone attitude toward most things.  I don't like the elitist, extreme postmodern sentiments exhibited by sheltered urban/suburbanite liberals but I also don't like the anti-science, anti-intellectual attitudes of conservatives.  I am also not very materialistic and most of my views are in some way influenced by my religious and spiritual upbringing.

I'm a big fan of libertarian-ish Democrats like Jon Tester and Brian Schweitzer; I'm probably in agreement with them on just about everything except oil pipelines.

Mostly just opportunism, as I believe that there is basically nothing I can do that will ever change anything in this society. I mean, I'm not rich, nor do I hold an important position, so I have very little in the way of access to any levers of power. But, you know, even if I did, I still doubt I'd really be able to change anything - if we look at today's crop of democratic governments, they're basically running about like Keystone Kops attempting, and by and large failing, to deal with massive sh**tstorm of problems that modern western societies face (terrorism, deindustrialisation, climate change, cultural change etc), and even society's billionaires are by and large failing to implement their goals on any kind of large scale. I mean, just to take one example, I don't know how much moolah the Koch Brothers have shelled out over the years (a lot I imagine) - sure, they've had some successes, but their vision of a libertarian society remains a pipe dream.

Maybe the world does need to change, but that's certainly not gonna happen in a modern democracy, with all the competing forces (traditional media, social media, 'activists', interest groups etcetera) acting to undermine any real coherent policies being put forward, from either left or right, to try and get a handle on some of the problems I alluded to earlier. So I might as well just absolve myself of thinking about these things too much; if our governments and all the 'great men' can't solve these issue, how an earth can an ordinary bloke with about £2000 in his bank account possibly hope to. I just try to focus on my own petty interests and accept that, with regard to wider society, what will be will be. I don't particularly want to sound #edgy, #nihilistic or whatever, because you know I'm not a particularly angry person and I'm quite happy with the way my own life is going, which is really and truly what I try and restrict myself to caring about because I don't have the power to influence much beyond that sphere.

Now, of course, I've got a preference for traditional conservatism and have no love for liberalism or leftism because I don't believe either of the latter will improve my life a great deal. I'm also not a big fan of 'change', which does seem contradictory to the concerns I expressed earlier, but then my rough solution to most of those is fairly reactionary and geared towards entrenching the status quo (with more restrictions on freedom I guess, and reemphasising the importance of my state and nation above all others), which might be enough to halt the seemingly endless slide to western society cracking up (which no doubt will be speeded up by further liberalisation/attempts to enact leftist initiatives). On the other hand it may not, but then I'm a pretty simple minded guy so you can't expect me to have any of the answers.

Pessimism has become my main ideology nowadays. I voted for Trump and defend him a good amount but his politics are a deep departure from the intelligentsia-style conservatism that I have long believed in.

I don't like the alt-right, I don't like populism and, most of all, I despise all the former Reagan conservatives who are now all-of-a-sudden Trump loyalists on every issue. I'm sure a lot of people here think that I'm a "Trump loyalist" but I am very much still opposed to his populist rhetoric on free trade, among other issues.

You can support Trump and not be a suck up and a sell out.

Trump's the current President but he's not an ideological hero of mine. Jack Kemp, Ronald Reagan, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Arthur Brooks etc... all still rank high as my ideological heroes.

My Zionism has also seen pessimism take over. Naftali Bennett has proven time and time again that he cannot be a competent leader of the religious-nationalist wing of the Israeli right. He uses mainly empty catch phrases and has no real ideological intelligence. I like Bennett, but he's not a good leader.

The Likud and PM Netanyahu need a legitimate right-wing partner who can hold them to true to ideological principle while also not saying idiotic things to "rally the base."  So far, Liberman and Yisrael Beiteinu have done a much better job of keeping the coalition on a good, positive pace. Which is a bit mind blowing.

FTR - I am still a big supporter of Likud and Bibi, but they are in a coalition government and that coalition needs to have other leaders who can be productive ideologically and philosophically. It can't just be the Likud and Bibi doing all the heavy-lifting. I am also very critical of Kulanu - I think the party will fall apart sooner or later.

My idealized world is incoherent and based on a number of contradictory impulses that would likely be terrifying if ever reassembled as an actual ideology.

pardon to hijack that thread but since you went so much into detail..... i think there is no real question, that liberman is someone who wants to 1) to good for himself and his base and 2)is old enough to know how the game is played, even if he sometimes runs his mouth like a nuclear bomb.....

and bennett is meant to be an ideological, youngish "outsiderish" hardliner, who would rather nuke the whole thing than compromise...isn't that his deal all along?
