And due in no small part to the difficulties they're experiencing trying to repeal and replace Obamacare:

I wonder what the chances are that they just give up on actually trying to pay for the tax cuts and just pass them anyway. Or maybe the better question is how long until they do that.

IIRC, in order to pass them via reconciliation (meaning, without any Democratic support), they can't last more than 10 years unless they're paid for.  So if they're not paid for, then they have to expire 10 years hence, a la the Bush tax cuts of 2001.

Maybe if Republican tax "reform" weren't a grab-bag of goodies for the haute bourgeoisie and confidence tricks on everybody else, McConnell wouldn't be having this problem.

You can either support tax cuts combined with massive, unprecedented cuts to the budget or you can surrender any claim to being a deficit hawk. Republicans barely have the will to pass tax reform on any grand scale, let alone implementing the kind of cuts to the budget that'd be required just to offset the additional deficits caused by those tax cuts. Republicans need to admit that they're even less fiscally responsible than Democrats (history has proven the deficit balloons more under Republicans than Democrats, IIRC) and that they prioritize tax cuts for the wealthy over reducing the deficit or lowering the debt.
