Native white native parentage:

New York  21.2%
Chicago  20.3%
Philadelphia  39.6%
Boston  30.3%
San Francisco  20.8%
Pittsburgh  31%

In other words, both Irish and Germans outnumbered NWNP's in New York, the Germans outnumbered NWNP's in Chicago and the Irish outnumbered them in Boston and San Francisco.

I believe you can get a spreadsheet on this by county through NHGIS.

When looking at the old census data, I was struck by how distinctive the Twin Cities were, with Germans and Irish dominant in St. Paul, and Scandinavians in Minneapolis.

You will find similar differentiation at the county level, with Germans more prevalent in the earlier settled counties in the south. I think there are a couple of outlier counties as well.

Pennsylvania isn't nearly as German as I thought it was during that time period.

Pennsylvania isn't nearly as German as I thought it was during that time period.

These are 1st and 2nd generation German Americans.  Those of colonial German ancestry (of which there are many in PA) would be in the NWNP category.

Here's a book about the relationship between 19th century German immigrants and colonial stock German Americans in Philadelphia:
