Since today, the civil union law is amended by another 2 major points that LGBT groups wanted, to streamline it with the hetero marriage law.

http://orf.at/stories/2385778

The HOSI, the biggest LBGT group in Austria, now even said in a press article that the current amended version of the civil union law even makes the CU better than the antiquated hetero marriage law and more in line with 21st century marriage laws.

According to the HOSI, some differences between hetero and LGBT marriage remain, but according to the group they are meaningless and virtually irrelevant in every day life (or even counterproductive).

HOSI now even says that adapting the CU law to the current hetero marriage law would "be a step backwards."

They say that first the hetero marriage law has to be "updated" ... Wink

So, I guess we can now welcome Austria into the Gay Marriage column.

"Civil Union law now better than hetero marriage law."

No, it's not.

Look at the links. They are all official.

The ORF (=Austrian public broadcaster) would never post fake news.

This example - which is btw totally real and not some kind of April fool - shows how much has changed in the last years. When this thing was discussed the first time, it was a big debate, which ended with our kind of strange "compromise" and now....under-cover, without much attention....the record is set...."straight" (:-P).

If it's not called marriage, it's not marriage. That said, good to know that gay people have it pretty good in Austria.

Why does it practically matter for LGBTs if it's called "marriage" or not - when their partnership law is now actually superior and more modern than the traditional hetero marriage law ?

Is an Apple iPhone not a good phone just because it's not called "Nokia" ?

because its still something different; which suggests that a relationship between two people of the same sex if somehow different from that between two people of the same sex when it isn't.  If they wanted to do this; why not amend the marriage law to both include these new protections and include same sex couples in it - that would literally be better for everyone!!

Sooner or later this will be the case anyway I guess, because some hetero couple will sue that they are discriminated against the gays, who have the better system. And then they will update the antiquated straight marriage law to a 21st century law. And while they are at it, they might simply merge the 2 laws into one.

Can straight people marry via the partnership method?

No. They have to use the inferior hetero marriage law.

That actually happened in Sweden before we adopted a gender neautral gender law. Several straight couples applied to become "registered partners" because they preferred that over actually being married and took it to the court when they were denied.

See that, I went all Tender Branson on this thread and made it about my own country instead.
