This amendment to the Senate swearing-in dates is a very great idea, and it is recommended that my fellow Assembly members vote AYE to this bill.

Thank you to Lieutenant Governor JGibson for sponsoring this on my behalf.

Current law does not set an official swearing-in date for Lincoln's regional senators.  Therefore, it is presumed that elected senators are to begin their terms immediately upon election.  I find this problematic and disruptive to the legislative process.  Under current tradition, a defeated incumbent senator could find him or herself immediately having to relinquish their Senate duties before Congress has finished its ongoing session, while debates are underway, when votes are taking place, when a senator has bills that are either under consideration or are scheduled for consideration which could abruptly lose their original sponsor.

I am of the opinion that House and Senate members ought to begin their terms concurrently, as they should be elected concurrently.  This amendment will bring our region's election procedure in sync with federal law.

That's a very good point made, Esteemed Senator Scott.

I think that this is a common sense proposal and I ask that the Assembly votes in favour of this.

I have no objections to this bill. As I mentioned earlier in this debate, a vote in favor of this bill would go a long way to making this region more streamlined for future Senate elections.

Can we move this to a vote? It seems everyone has no objections to this amendment.

Sure, although I think we'd have to vote for cloture.

-------

We will now be voting on RGN's motion for closure. 3 Ayes are needed to send this to a final vote.

With 4 Ayes and one absence, this amendment has passed the assembly and will be ratified following a public referendum.
