Don't forget that Saudi Arabia also seems entirely unwilling to moderate or reform, while Iran is most certainly less extremist now than in 1979. Iran can and might be willing to reform, Saudi Arabia, as a feudal monarchy of a petrostate, will not.

The Sauds had a wonderful opportunity to, at the very least, limit the influence of hardline wahhabists after the Siege of Mecca. Instead, they embraced them. I don't think Faisal, for all his flaws, would've f**k around with them if he were alive and something like that happened.
