Of all the things the Democrats could threaten a shutdown over, this is the hill they choose? Total incompetence. The wall is not an unpopular idea in broad scope.

it is in the south and it is going to become even more unpopular if realized.

Ugh, I don't think shutdowns are helpful or justified, regardless of which party does them. If PP actually does get defunded, it's going to backfire on Republicans enormously, or "big league" if you will.

For whatever reason, even though this country is around 55% "pro-choice", only about 40% of the country is "pro-choice, and I seriously consider the issue when voting". I'll believe that the defunding of PP will be a significant electoral cost to Rs when I see it, and not before.

The wall is a billion dollar boondoggle and it can be easily framed as that. There won't be a shutdown, but there will be a good case against spending billions on a wall that is nearly impossible to build logistically.

As unjustifiable as a government shutdown is, especially in this situation, do Democrats even have the power to pull a crazy stunt like this?

"Only about 40%" lol. If that large a portion of the electorate is ready to come at the GOP with bloodthirst, they're going to be in trouble. Even if it's only "liberals" who care about PP, it'll probably give them yet another reason to turn out in large numbers in 2018.

PP is too abstract a thing and wouldn't be forced to close down anyway.

but if access to abortion is restrained even more in general or Roe vs Wade is really going to be contested.....THAT would hurt the GOP imho.

These 2 things... especially the Wall... are NOT worth a shutdown risk.

Ugh. Don't give Trump a reason to blame things on Democrats!

They wouldn't be wrong to do it. The people elected a Republican Congress in 2010 and 2014, which to me was a sanction for obstruction. If the Democrats gain control of the House or Senate in 2018 and forced a shutdown, I'd be displeased but I'd be a hypocritical asshat if I didn't defend Schumer's right to use the tactic.

Of course, McConnell has the right to use the nuclear option once. Harry Reid let that genie out of the bottle.

i hope sanchez's scenario plays out.

doesn't matter for me if there would be another 12 years "hole" 'till the next democratic president as long as that time, the filibuster would be gone forever.

The wall is a budget-buster, and I can see plenty of other things that the  unds could be better spent on.
