"Freedom movie"?  I think its one of the best movies I've ever seen and I think it was actually panned when it came out, but it must have made an impact among those that saw it because the V mask became a symbol, and I think you can get the V mask on Amazon...

I thought it was the most political film I've ever seen and I mean that in a good way- it seems to be a movie that could unite both progressives and conservatives.  It's anti-authoritarian, pro-freedom, and has a very powerful scene in which the heroine loses her fear which makes her a different person.

It's probably more of a millennial movie.  Has anyone seen it and what did you think?

Great movie indeed!

I'm a bit split on the symbol the mask has come to represent, but admittedly biased because of my dislike of the Anonymous collective (whatever that even means anymore)

More evidence for my suspicion that you are a Democratic Underground poster who went into a coma during the second Bush term and only recently woke up.

While those who wear the mask tend to be quite self-righteous, I have to admire whoever sells those things at $25 a pop for the irony alone.

Ironically, the mask is meant to symbolize freedom, whereas Guy Fawkes himself tried to blow up the Parliament as part of a scheme to reimpose Catholic theocracy.

I remember when it used to represent rebellion against Bush and the Republicans... and then the Tea Party and Anonymous hijacked it... hopefully it can come back home now.

It is an amazing film. Very long, but every minute had me captured.

Really? I guess the plot structure just made it seem longer.

How cliche do you have to be to think of this as some stalwart battle cry for the freedom of man? The book--with the political machinations by various government members for power over a crumbling, delegitimized bureaucracy--was far more interesting. The film is simply "1984" with a happy ending. This crap is so Bush era.

EDIT: In light of the Catholic connection, I have to say I am now more proud than ever to be born on Guy Fawkes Day.

Culturally, it was a pretty influential film considering that it largely helped popularize the Guy Fawkes mask.

I agree that it was a very Bush-era adaptation of the graphic novel though, so it may look a bit outdated thirty years from now or so. But still a solid movie.

Meh. Gives me that same feeling that Fight Club and American History X do. In the sense that they are both attempting to be some deep social or political commentary but instead come off as shallow.

A movie would inevitably seem shallow compared to the graphic novel. It really would've been better as an HBO miniseries.

Well put. From a pure story standpoint, it's an engaging and interesting film. The people who obsess over it, however, are usually geeks who have infowars stickers that cover their webcam. Personally, I love the graphic novel of V for Vendetta, and it was one of the first things that got me into graphic novels in the first place, but for some reason, the movie adaptation is so contrived, yet so suited for that demographic of people that think it's a political forecast rather than a work of fiction.

Also, the Anonymous connection makes it even more cringeworthy. For all the good that Anonymous does, they're still a bunch of lame neckbeards who think that hacktivism solves anything. Yeah, it's cool to doxx child predators and reveal the identities of the KKK (which...did they really even do that?) But taking down the CIA's website and planting porn on people's computers is a level of stupidity that can't be matched by any other millennial activist group. Plus, they really hate SJWs, which is kind of weird considering their viewpoints overlap quite a bit. I guess it depends on how you see the whole egalitarian vs. feminism debate. Gotta impress 4Chan somehow.
