I wonder if anybody else read this novel, of which I've been immediatelly reminded upon reading the news

At the intersection between the ritualistic tribalism of execution and the rationality of state administration.

The older I get, the more disturbing it is that barbarism is just an accepted measure that simply goes by with only a soft whisper for a day or two and then forgotten.

whoever supports that kind of judgement is, in my opinion, the opposite of "pro-life".

Ok, so:

1. If you are going to have a death penalty, I guess I don't mind how they space executions out...

2. Except that they are rushing these for the wrong reason, which isn't right and isn't fair to the inmates who might be able to legally avoid execution if they have more time,

3. And the death penalty is terrible and needs to be abolished.

We should use the guillotine, not lethal injection. But there doesn't seem to be anything inherently wrong with the timing here.

The death penalty is so barbarous a practice and so capricious in use that it cannot have a deterrent effect.

I agree, it's not a deterrent currently. That's why we need to apply it as soon as possible after all appeals of one's conviction have been exhausted (preferably on the same day in which the defendant loses their final appeal) (to make it clear we are serious about applying the death penalty) , require two separate juries, hearing arguments and discussing them separately, to convict the defendant of the act before the death penalty can be applied (to restore public confidence in verdict correctness and thoroughly double-check everything), and use the guillotine (so the defendant's death is assured and the procedure is painless and fast).

Yeah, and make it public.

I don't like the death penalty, but if we're going to have it, we might as well make it interesting and use the ticket proceeds to fix our bridges.

Firing squad is far less diabolical than lethal injection. Just go with that. It usually yields success.

I agree with many of the posts in this thread. The death penalty is barbaric, or at the very least, it's overused.

A few of them might be saved yet by some courts, it seems sketchy to rush executions because the law on the lethal drugs is going to expire. And they are having trouble with the drugs because the Europeans and others refuse to make them anymore. Sketchy but might be legal who knows.

Eventually the states will turn to nitrogen asphyxiation which has the following characteristics:

1. It's quick and reliable

2. It's painless

3. It involves no disfiguring of the body

4. It gives no warning (although a scent could be added -- choice of the condemned... maybe cinnamon? something floral? new car?)

5. It leaves no toxic residues except for the emissions of the condemned (unlike cyanide)

6. Nobody has to search for a vein (a problem with addicts)

7. The gas is easy to buy or concentrate (just remove the oxygen -- a nitrogen-argon mixture with a little water vapor would be fine.
