This is what happens when some are given power over others - people they deem to be less than human. That man was no less deserving of dignity than any of those prison guards, yet they felt justified torturing a mentally ill man. Did he not have feelings of love, hope, fear, and despair? Did he not feel the excruciating pain of that slow, agonizing death they forced him to endure for their sadistic pleasure? What if that had been one of them, or perhaps a loved one of theirs? That man likely had friends and/or family who loved him, whose hearts were shattered when this man's life was cruelly and unnecessarily stolen from him. And our "justice system," the same one that had once justified segregation and enslavement of African Americans and the persecution of homosexuals (among countless other examples), does what it has always done best - excuse the abuse of power and privilege by such individuals, while protecting the institution that enabled these men from the rightful condemnation it deserves.
