This looks bad right now, but in reality republicans probably saved themselves from a 2018 shellacking by not passing this utterly terrible bill.
By pissing off their own base with keeping the mandate for two more years? This was a lose-lose situation in my opinion.

You are forgetting that most voters don't know anything and those that do only care for 5 minutes. Two years from now nobody will be voting on the basis of the GOP failing to repeal Obamacare, but a lot of people would have voted against the GOP if they had gotten much worse health care, whoch would have been the resukt fir millions with this bill.

I don't see why you are so pessimistic, this is going to be a disaster for the GOP. Anytime you lose fighting for healthcare bad things happen.

My point isnt that they will remember the failure today. Its that they seem to be counting on people not blaming them for rising premiums well they had full power to do away with the law. That isn't a easy sell to say i bear no responsibility for this to base voters who have believed for years republicans would get rid of the mandate on day one.

Excellent news that this failed.

Obamacare needs to be reformed badly because it has significant flaws (massive price hikes) and not repealed and replaced.

He'll learn soon enough. He's now responsible for ObamaCare succeeding. The Republicans will quietly transition to being supporters of the law.

ACA will further cause monopolies & will substantially inflate costs & under another Dem President will cause severe electoral damage unless atleast a "Public option" is put in which will bring down costs.

Pelosi openly said in the press conference that a public option is just not possible & minor adjustments like funding for high risk polls, prescription drug costs, etc will Dems proposed solutions.

This is not going to contain costs & if the costs explode then it could sink a Dem presidency from 2020 !

It is not a disaster. Passing the bill would have been a disaster for 2018/2020. This is a major failure & embarrassment which many people will forget in the long run. Ofcourse his base won't like it (maybe some of them won't vote for him) & Trump may even be blamed for ACA price hikes now & will be looked as a failure as he couldn't get it past under a Republican Congress.

But regardless, Pelosi is like overjoyed & is embarrassed to even ask for a Public option. None of them have any real plans to fix the ACA !

Trump is a fundamentally weak president at the end of a conservative era. This is for all intents and purposes the beginning of the end. There may and probably will be Republican victories on tax reform and infrastructure reform and even one more election but in the end we know Trump is fundamentally weak. All we need is this to play out.

That's the take home lesson. The stage is now set.

Trump's not totally wrong though: The massive premium hikes are not going over well with the working class and it will depend on how effectively Republicans and Trump will tie this to the Democrats before the next elections. If Democrats don't find a proper message on their own they cannot simply rely on the Republicans to implode. They need to work for it and the best way to do so would be to find a bipartisan way to reign in the premium hikes. Otherwise it will really explode on the Democrats sooner or later because they are the architects of this ...

even if i would accept that you got a point, republicans control EVERYTHING and have chosen to change NOTHING.

there was a real price spike close before the election and NO ONE at all argues, that it has decided the election in any way.

i agree that the system must be fixed but without killing it and that can only be achieved if both sides agree on the need for fixing.

this is not about the skills of the democrats....i would say republicans would need an unbelievable amount of political capital to blame the minority successfully after years of total control.

didn't work in 2010 with much worse conditions, won't work in 2018/2020.

The other lesson to be drawn from this: the 44th president will have a more robust and durable legacy than the 45th president -- by far. The legacy of Barack Obama is now enshrined in law for all time until universal healthcare comes.

Obama's great gamble, his great game, paid off. We now know he was a far better strategist and had a more far reaching vision of the world. With Ryan's words that ObamaCare is here to stay the Republican Party has committed itself to preserving his legacy and worldview.

Stunning historical victory for Obama.

Obama's legacy is mixed. He left with strained race relations. It's probably too early to judge.
