Isn't the House GOP setting itself up for a rough midterm if they vote to pass this, knowing it will almost surely fail in the Senate? They will have tons of their members on record voting for a bill that would have eventually left tens of millions without insurance, significantly reduced Medicaid funding and delivered a large tax cut to the wealthy.

If they can't wrangle up the votes in the Senate, then I can't see an upside to voting for this.

they've set themselves for an interesting midterm no matter what because of how hard they're pushing this bill. I get a feeling of Hillarycare from this.

This is why you should always contact your Congressman and Senators. Sometimes it really does have an impact.

I doubt Thomas Massie (of the FREEDOM CAUCUS and a generally Amash-Paul wing politician) was ever going to support TryunandFailuncare, but it's a nice anecdote at least.

Interesting that Trump is roughly paralleling Obama. Entering office with a majority in both houses, immediately pivoting to healthcare, putting together a compromise bill that no one likes and spending an inordinate amount of political capital on it. (The possible difference being that Obama did get something passed.)

If you compare Obama's and Trump's approval ratings in their early presidencies one might say that Trump does't really have any capital to begin with.

herein is the problem with the Trump administration from the start - they thought just because they won and nobody expected it, that they would have insurmountable political capital. The GOP, too, thought they would get a beating in the Senate and only lost two seats, so they thought we can do whatever we want. As it turns out, you don't get a mandate for getting 3 million less votes.

Amodei being opposed makes me think this is really going to fail - I wouldn't characterize Amodei as a particularly conservative or moderate house member. He's right in the center of the GOP ideological spectrum.

Trump has literally been meeting with congresscritters to get them to vote for this! he owns it!

but there's no solution that unites the GOP caucus. A stable enough amount of members want the medicaid expansion to continue, while an equally stable number want to end the medicaid expansion. The Republican moderates and the Freedom Caucus don't have points of agreement.
