The President of the Eurogroup is in trouble today after suggesting that south European countries spent all their money in booze and women and then ask for financial aid:

These comments have been criticized even within his own European party, the PES, who, like others, are demanding his resignation. Mr Dijsselbloem, on the other hand, is refusing to apologize and stand by his comments.

The catastrophic result of the PvdA may have been too much for him....

Seems like finding out if they do spend more on booze would be easy enough.  <Google Fu>

Yeah, he wrong.  Eastern Europeans are the drinkers.  Northerners drink more than Southerners.  Portugal is high, but German, UK and France are all above Spain and WAY above Italy.  There is probably a better way to check, but I'm using wiki's alcohol consumption per capita chart.

I suppose if the southerners had statistically significantly smaller incomes....he might still be right.  But who cares?  Unless the northerners are giving the southerners a lot of money, why should they care how they spend their own money?

Well, they surely have more fun in their life than this sad, angry person.

He will be gone soon. PvdA won't be in the next government so he won't be finance minister which means that he can't be Eurogroup chair.

Well, he's trying to get the support necessary to stay on for the remainder of his term regardless. This comment may well have prevented that from happening. A shame, because I could not have wished for a more conservative Eurogroup leader.

Having read the whole transcript, he didn't say "south European wast money on booze and women", he, in reality, made a pretty lame comparison between those European countries who are responsible and had to help European countries in crisis. But overall, he should not have made such a comparison... doesn't look good.

But the Portuguese PM, António Costa, didn't look good either. He called Dijsselbloem a racist, a xenophobe and a sexist...  Not wise words mr. Prime Minister.
