Let's say Trump doesn't run for re-election because he finds the job to be a nagging bore, the GOP field includes:

Former Governor John Kasich (R-OH)
Radio Host Alex Jones (R-TX)
Vice President Mike Pence (R-IN)

And these three battle to a tie and they don't make any sort of agreement with one another because they all despise each other. At the GOP convention, after a few ballots, a dark horse candidate arises in Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, who resigns the court to run, and picks Rubio as his running mate. Despite the circumstances, Gorsuch is well-liked.

The Democratic convention goes a bit smoother, as Al Franken has a clear delegate lead over his runner up, Andrew Cuomo, who came to impressive surge after winning South Carolina over Cory Booker, and Martin O'Malley, whose early wins in New Hampshire and Colorado felt like the start of something big before tumbling into... nothing. Franken went on to pick Kirsten Gillibrand, a New Yorker like Cuomo, to be on the ticket.
