Just a few days ago the star witness in a Preet Bharara anti-Putin trial was thrown out of his fourth story window in Russia the day before it was supposed to start.

This is Europe's Syria. Sure, Kiev is a stable and isn't the Donbass but you can't expect the conflict to contain itself there. Of course there are going to be war related killings in Kiev. A suspect is alive and in custody (taken in at the scene). That doesn't sound like the Putin MO to me.

you have a point of some kind but otherwise this guy wasn't part of the "normal" war.

and no, i am not proposing putin sent an assassin himself - even while he could - the inner workings of his system usually do that for him, with or without his active consent.

in some cases putin is even pissed about the deadliness of his own allies. and the killer himself is usually just a little pawn, usually also not very political or ideological.

Yes, but you seem to underestimate long-standing Russian policy on defectors.

if this was done by someone participating in the east-ukrainian war efforts, it would be even worse, imho.

Correction: the suspect is dead.

The Russians used to encourage defection. They used to tell elderly citizens back in the Soviet days how to defect should they get permission to visit the United States. Solzhenitsyn was deported to West Germany.

It's a shame the only political party in Russia challenging Putin is the Communists.

more like the only political opp party which he accepts, because it's no danger for his base and cooperates with him on a number of issues.

So, for the very staunch Putin supporters out there, is the explanation for these killings/attacks more "Fake news!" or more "They got exactly what they deserved"?

A combination of both. This guy could've been killed by Ukrainian anti-Putin activists for all we know-he was, in American parlance, for the invasion of the Crimea before he was against it. He wasn't from what I've read a particularly liked figure.

I mean, I could make a joke about how the reporter who fell down the stairs happened to be a drunk, but that doesn't matter. Putin killed her because he's evil but at least Castro gave the Cubans healthcare, amirite?
