I'll never understand why anyone would want these companies to be able to sell people's personal information to third parties.  Yuck, that's just so creepy!

It's all about profit.

The GOP is not human-being oriented.

It isn't about what is good for consumers. They are the party of business. When you look at things like this through that lens, I typically find that their actions make more sense.

Exactly. Most Democrats interpret Republican policies through a Democratic lens, which is why it makes no sense to them, is evil, and why they view Republicans as simply malicious or ignorant. The party openly proclaims itself the representative of business; an identification which somehow Democrats don't take seriously. The party's base is a somewhat tense tripartite of socially conservative workers (primarily Evangelical Protestants), the traditional middle class (small business owners, professionals, and managers), and elements of the capitalist/elite class (Koch brothers, Sheldon Adelson, US Chamber of Commerce, Business Roundtable, and many on Wall Street). While the Tea Party and Trump represent the traditional middle-class interests, the GOP establishment (Ryan, McConnel, etc...) represents the capitalist class. They still mostly call the shots, especially since Trump has in many ways sought to appease and align himself with them since his election. So while conflicting messages emerge about the party, at the end of the day it represents business interests above all else and offers just enough concessions to Evangelicals to keep them voting.

In the GOP, privacy only matters if you are a sexual predator or a tax cheat.
