I've always thought that Trump will give it try, but I don't consider it likely now..
Still, he has nothing to lose if he'll decide to try it..

Wow, is true that you, guys, has that much more costly prices than we in Europe? Does it depend on lobbying?

He probably doesn't have will or leverage for anything in this area of policy.

-Agreed. Republicans, as a rule, dislike the welfare state, as do many conservadems. And Trump is in big pharma's pocket -one of the reasons I've changed my pictures.

He might have the will (he's advocated it before), but I doubt there are 20 Senators who'll vote yes, much less 60.

If - massive if - Dems win both houses in 2018 (unlikely) then I could see him doing it

I used to think he had the leverage to push for nearly anything. The inaccuracy of that assessment is growing more obvious by the day.

He might get the votes from some rural state trumpists if he pushes hard for it as well as some more left leaning democrats but it wouldn't be enough in the current congress.

He might somehow be able to push for an expansion of Medicare, say to include long term care (taking that over from Medicaid) and/or bump down the age of eligibility (say to age 62 instead of age 65) as part of a more general health care reform.  But Medicare for all just ain't going to happen with a Republican Congress.

It might be the right solution. Many Democrats want that. (If anything it would be wise to drop the Medicare age to 50 or so just to reduce age discrimination in the workplace).

Just because it is Trump policy does not mean that it is bad policy. He would need Democrats, but if that is his "Repeal and Replace", then maybe that is one victory we can concede him.

Question: how do you save the insurance companies? At age 60 I found medical insurance more costly than rent or payments on a really-nice car.

No. He would rupture the Reagan coalition temporarily if he did that. He's an extraodinarily weak president who is more at the mercy of events -- more than most presidents.

Only possible in 2019 if there is a Dem House by a substantial margin and the Senate has no more Republicans in it than it does now.  I think he could get something that involves individuals under age 65 paying substantial premiums for their Medicare through a Dem House and a near 50/50 Senate with the overrepresentation of rural states there.  Can you really see e.g. Susan Collins, John Hoeven and Shelley Moore Capito voting this down in the current climate after it just passed the House?

He doesn't have the will, and he has less leverage than any other modern president except possibly Carter.

It would require a large turnover in the White House. I cannot imagine Mulvaney and Price, for example, willingly going along with this plan so both would probably have to fall on their swords along with all the other Heritage people.
