This is going to need more verification.  It's so ridiculous sounding, and it is hard to believe that no one would have leaked it at the time considering all the leaks surrounding Trump every time he does anything.

What does it say about Western civilization when its most reputable leader is Madam Austerity?

As for the bill, Trump obviously doesn't understand that no country "owes" the United States anything for belonging to NATO; it's an international treaty group that have committed to mutual defense. It's not a protectorate of the United States military, regardless of how much some Americans may want to view it that way. And no country is even obligated to spend 2% of their GDP on their military at this point; that doesn't apply until some point in the early 2020s. So Trump is pulling this all out of his ass for the purpose of upsetting the balance and stability within NATO. Whether it's just to look tough or aid Russia, I'm not sure.

The report is in the Times, so they likely valued the amount in pounds for the convenience of their readers. In any case, since Trump has been accusing them of playing games with their currency, he certainly wasn't going to submit the bill in Deutscheuros.

Depends upon which marks they're using.  If they're using Weimar marks it'd be quite a bit.  In November 1923, one US dollar was worth about 4.2x1012 marks.

I doubt even the Trump admin would be that stupid. Perhaps the amount was mentioned during the talks and the message got garbled in translation to a literal  printed invoice
