Introduction
Retired General Colin Powell addresses the 2000 Republican National Convention

Colin Powell, former Secretary of State under George W. Bush and retired 4-star U.S. Army General, was floated as a potential presidential candidate in 1992, 1996, and 2000, however he never decided to run in any political elections.

But what if Powell decided to run for president? What would his presidency look like?

2000 Republican Party presidential primaries

Candidates:
  • Retired General Colin Powell (R-NY)
  • Governor George W. Bush (R-TX)
  • Former Assistant Secretary of State Alan Keyes (R-MD)
  • Businessman Steve Forbes (R-NJ)
  • Former Undersecretary of Education Gary Bauer (R-KY)
  • Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT)
  • Former Governor Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
  • Author Pat Buchanan (R-VA) (ran independent after dropping out)
  • Former Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole (R-NC)
  • Congressman John Kasich (R-OH)
  • Former Vice President Dan Quayle (R-IN)
  • Senator Bob Smith (R-NH)

Primaries and caucuses:

Blue denotes primaries and caucuses won by General Colin Powell, red denotes those won by Governor George W. Bush

Powell scored an early victory in the Alaska caucus, however Bush pulled an upset victory in Iowa. Despite the loss of Iowa, Powell scored a decisive victory over Bush in New Hampshire. Bush went on the immediate offensive against Powell in South Carolina, with his campaign manager, Karl Rove, launching a huge attack campaign in the state. General Powell used the attacks against Bush to his advantage, painting Bush as being "desperate" and retreating to mudslinging.

With a slew of defeats leading up to Super Tuesday, Bush dropped out of the race after losing every contest on March 7.

Nope. McCain said he wouldn't run if Powell was in the primaries. In this scenario, McCain becomes one of Powell's biggest supporters.

This is going to sound really dumb and nit picky, but Alan Keyes' honorific is Ambassador.

Other than that I'm excited.

Yeah, a pro-choice wins a Republican nomination in a walk.

Color me sceptical.

Powell is close to the Bushes, I can't see him going against Bush in most plausible scenarios at least, but hey, realism isn't the only thing that matters in a TL... This is unique and well written. I am wanting moar.

Just a side note, updates may come slowly as I am currently bogged down by my schoolwork Sad Don't worry, I'll have a page on the night of the election coming this Friday!
