The best choice i'd say was 1956 between Eisenhower and Stevenson. The worst was probably 2016.

Best 1944.  Roosevelt and Dewey were top quality candidates.

Also 1876.  Rutherford B Hayes and Samuel J Tilden were both well qualified.

Worst 2016. You can't believe what Trump says, as well as his many other flaws, and Clinton was an entitled, establishment , crooked candidate.

Also 1972. McGovern was a leftist ideologue and Nixon was a crook.

I was actually going to name 1876 as one of the worst, it was the first that sprang to my mind.
Another worst would be 1796 and 1800, in that both Adams and Jefferson were really flawed.
A lot of the elections between Jackson and Lincoln, and Lincoln and Roosevelt, would probably count too.

I'd say 1992 is probably one of the best, with all sides being good candidates.
Same with '76, both two good candidates.

1976, especially when considering primary candidates on both sides.

Best: 1960. Worst (as in most vapid): 1988. Trivia: I personally met candidate Ron Paul in 1988, and I (or at least my young, idealistic, Ayn Rand-admiring college student self) believe he was the best choice in 1988.

1928? I'd have voted for Smith in a heartbeat! I'm sitting in a tavern as I write this.

In terms of most destructive to the national fabric, both in its execution and its aftermath (PV winner != EV winner) I'd say 2016.

Best: 1912. A choice between two top-ten presidents (Wilson and Roosevelt) and an average president (Taft).

Honorable mention: 1796/1800, 1844, 1944-1956

Worst: 1856. Buchanan is probably the worst president ever and Fillmore wasn't much better and was running for a nativist third party. Fremont was totally unqualified to be president.

Dishonorable mention: 1924, 1928, 1980
