Best: 1960. Worst (as in most vapid): 1988. Trivia: I personally met candidate Ron Paul in 1988, and I (or at least my young, idealistic, Ayn Rand-admiring college student self) believe he was the best choice in 1988.

Worst: 1924 (Cooldige and Davis only), 1928

Best: 1940 (by far), 1936, 1944, 1948 (excluding Thurmond), 1880
1928? I'd have voted for Smith in a heartbeat! I'm sitting in a tavern as I write this.

In terms of most destructive to the national fabric, both in its execution and its aftermath (PV winner != EV winner) I'd say 2016.
