While every other county in Utah trended Democratic, this county was a 37-point win for Romney in 2012, and a 44-point win for Trump. It's also the only county in Utah in which Trump got more votes than Romney. Why might that be?

Carbon County is mostly non-Mormon, so it behaves more like a generic rural West county.

It's also a heavily resource based community, with 10% of the workforce tied directly to oil, gas & mining, as well as a significant number of those whose employment is indirectly tied to supporting those industries.

Most significantly coal as well as a large natural gas production as well.

It's right in the name.  Carbon (meaning coal) was big here, and it used to be a big coal mining county.  From at least 1952 to 2000, it was pretty consistently Utah's most Democratic County, until coal country started moving away from the Democrats.  If you look at the swing/trend maps, you can  see that this county swung/trended more heavily to the Republicans in 2012 than any other county in Utah, even though it is one of Utah's least mormon counties.

That leads to the second point which is that since it's not very mormon, Trump's character didn't have a lot of sway on the people living there.

Thanks for the responses. If the main industry in Carbon County is/was coal, then it makes sense that Trump would do well here, compared to other parts of Utah.
