The President of the PRC is not a dictator, but the first among near-equals of an oligarchy, a ruling council called the Standing Committee.

The only real answers here would be Putin, Trump or Merkel.

Trudeau is not influential enough, and neither is Macron at this point.

Trudeau? Seriously?

Trump or Merkel. Putin's influence is waning after he overdo things.

Xi or Merkel.

Putin has already won the title too often, and I'm not sure Forbes would go for such a anti-climatic choice now. Trump can't be picked because he's a joke. Macron's and Trudeau's countries are simply not powerful enough on the world stage.

Putin or Trump. Personally I still think the American president is the most powerful person, but Forbes already gave it to Putin a couple of times. Germany still lacks hard power, Xi is first among equals (but apparently he's becoming more powerful) and Macron and Trudeau just aren't serious answers. Ranking Merkel over Obama a couple of years ago was really stupid though.

1. Trump
2. Putin
3. Merkel
4. Xi
5. Macron
6. Trudeau

I certainly think that the top five on this list are definitely the five most powerful people. I would argue that Theresa May is more powerful than Justin Trudeau, though, but less powerful than Narendra Modi.

I don't know why Modi isn't in contention for this.

I voted Putin. It's definitely between Putin and Merkel.

It's unlikely, but I think Macron might actually have a chance considering how quickly he's risen to prominence. His rise to power is even more shocking than Trump's imo.

I voted Xi. Putin is quite powerful in his own orbit, but outside it, he has practically none because no one trusts him. Russia lacks soft power big time. China can be abrasive, but it has the fully fledged economy to give it soft power that at this point is third after the U.S. and the EU.

1. Putin
2. Merkel
3. Trump (He can barely get things done with both chambers of congress under control of his party, that won't bode well for him)
4. Xi
5. Macron
6. Trudeau

Xi has consolidated power to a degree not seen since Deng if not Mao. If your characterization was ever true it certainly is not now. China has been quick to fill the leadership gap left by Trump with regards to sustainable development and the one belt one road initiative. Forbes clearly enjoys a little sensationalism so imagine the top 20 will look like this:

1. Xi Jinping
2. Angela Merkel
3. Vladimir Putin
4. Donald Trump
5. Emmanuel Macron
6. Narendra Modi
7. Pope Francis
8. Shinzo Abe
9. Bill Gates
10. Janet Yellen
11. Justin Trudeau
12. Jeff Bezos
13. King Salman bin Abdulaziz
14. Mario Draghi
15. Larry Page
16. Jean-Claude Junker
17. Mark Zuckerberg
18. Theresa May
19. Jamie Dimon
20. Jack Ma
