The choice of Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. proved to be questionable. Maybe not a disaster per se, but it definitely precluded the choice of a much stronger candidate who could have helped Nixon carry more sates; maybe a Ford or a Rockefeller.
Lodge was a statesman, not completely suitable to be an attack dog or a guard.
