Today, Portuguese parliament voted a motion to condemn the chemical attack in Syria that killed many people, including children. It was approved by all parties expect the Communists. This infuriated all parties especially CDS who criticized the Communists. The Communists responded saying that there is an investigation on who made the attack and that we should wait for it.

Really?? This is pathetic!! The PCP sometimes have some inexplicable positions and this is one of them. Sad

I actually have to agree with the bolded part. The west is jumping at definitive conclusions too early and with too little actual intel.

i technically agree but since the russian fairy-tale creator is running in over-drive and an independent investigation is going to be as impossible as with the mh17 case (or every other international crime somehow involving russian fingerprints), this inquiry was a non-starter.

Exactly. Well-intended, but it only leads to obfuscation and serves Russian propaganda.

Same as here, the orthodox communist still see Assad as defending "progressive Arabic policy" against imperialism and proxies (jihadist). The USSR is dead yet they still take their orders from Moscow.

Essentially this. Old Communist line of US imperialism but looking the other way on Russian intervention/atrocities.

Not just old communists. The Kremlin is putting a lot of money in various European parties, ranging from left all the way to far right, to have sympathetic voices.

Well, i don't know if PCP has any current links to Russia or the Kremlin, in the past they had and everybody knew about it, but if they have, today, that would be a huge story here in Portugal and it would be a gift sent from the heavens to Mr Costa.

After the vote against the Syrian chemical attack condemnation, the Communists made again news for the wrong reason.

Today, in Parliament all parties voted to condemn the gay persecution in Chechnya, except the Communists. Once again the PCP said that there is no proof these persecution exists and that they cannot pursue something that is being reported by international media. There were protests in the floor, with MP's shouting "There aren't gays in the PCP".

And then there's Venezuela. Parliament also approved a vote of condemnation for what it's happening in Venezuela but the PCP voted against it. In response, the Communists said that the Venezuela and the Venezuelan people are "being victim of a campaign of destabilization" by outside forces.

These guys are just unbelievable....

I don't really understand (or maybe I'm not being familiar enough with Portuguese politics) what they motivations are. On the surface it looks like a obstinate contrarianism.

I don't really understand (or maybe I'm not being familiar enough with Portuguese politics) what they motivations are. On the surface it looks like a obstinate contrarianism.

A big part of it yes. They were always a party that was against the general mood plus they have a weird relation with Russia because of the Soviet Union and it's downfall. They miss that and probably they see in Putin's Russia things that remind them of the Soviet Union.

But there's something else. They always had weird positions, like asking for a vote of sorrow for the death of Kim Jong-il, but since they support the PS government defending stuff like this is one of the few things they talk about. In the past the PCP was the "real opposition" to governments. It was them that went to schools to highlight bad funding, low teachers wages, bad health services, you name it. But since they became a supporter of the PS government they don't go anymore to schools and hospitals to highlight these stuff. They became quiet because any big criticism or rupture by them would be used by Antonio Costa to put the blame on them and they would be crushed in the polls.

So, in summary, they are in a very precarious situation right now, any small criticism to the PS is labeled as theater stunt and they are stuck with stuff they have a hard time defending.

Yeah... They asked or intended to have a vote but no one acepted and insted they release a note to the press regreating the death of Kim Jong-il.

And a few days later, they voted against a vote of sorrow for the death of Vaclav Havel, which shocked Parliament.
