The school is lucky that I don't live near the area or I would've torn the faculty a new asshole.

What kind of jackasses do we have working at school these days?

Have they lost their minds?

This was super common in my elementary school. Boys would be running around playing Rambo all recess. Punishing kids who do stuff like this isn't going to make any difference at all, especially when they go home and play games like GTA or Call of Duty. Not to say those games should be banned by any means, but that people need to accept that trying to censor behavior like this is the complete wrong way to even try and address the issue of gun violence.

Our best and brightest are not running our schools, it seems.

How do we stop getting so many busybodies teaching our kids?

The worst thing you can do is punish someone who doesn't understand why they're being punished.  That confusion plus the negative feelings being unaddressed over time can actually lead to major issues with alienation or even mild PTSD.

I hope her parents are being very supportive of her and explaining it.  She will need that.

These sort of suspensions have been quite common since Columbine, actually.

All this paternalism in school, from school uniforms to suspending (usually minority) kids for minor offences like mouthing off, having more officers in schools, and "higher" standards for standardized testing. They have all failed, badly. Incidents like these are absolute nonsense that are the product of decades of awful education policy.

^This. We weren't allowed to pretend anything we played with was a weapon back when I was in elementary school from '01-'08.

This isn't new. I happens all the time now.
I have read many of these stories, including kids who use their hand/fingers to imitate a gun.

This is probably irrelevant to the thread, but I actually knew someone in boot camp who went to captain's mast for pointing an obviously fake gun (it was an orange prop used for training purposes) at another recruit while on watch. How did he get caught? Some other guy in my division snitched on him. That is some serious bulls**t.

Pointing a fake gun at someone else as a form of horseplay is not egregious. It's not like he was trying to rob a bank or rob another person. He shouldn't have been sent to mast.

Things are ass-backwards these days.
