This is absurd... in the future, English will be the world language as lingua franca. It is spoken not only in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia, but also places like India and Nigeria with fast-growing populations and economies... and it is the most studied language in the world. Chinese is an extremely difficult language to learn and it will never become popular in the US. Chinese schoolchildren are already required to learn English as a second language, and proficiency is required for university examinations. None of this will change. China's economic growth has already slowed down a lot, and will never return to the levels of the 1990s and 2000s.

The paranoia here is absurd... the idea that we have to start WWIII to prevent an imaginary rise of China or that Santander is some prophet from the future is just bizarre. It goes against any evidence of the ability of time travel. Fantasy stories are just that, stories made up by Hollywood.

Mandarin is a non starter as a world language. Mandarin has over 50,000 characters vs 26 letters in English. Not to mention Mandarin is tonal.

Yeah, the Chinese are basically "handling" (I use that term loosely) NK, so Trump isn't going to do a thing to interfere with their actions.  It's a miracle he got XI to do anything.

wonder if this is just kabuki or real, if the airline is forced to counter the narrative of the state (!) broadcaster.

well, to be fair, media outlets in china are allowed some freedom inside of their boundaries.

This. I have a gut feeling that China will successfully defuse the situation and will get NK to stand down.

Plus Pence is going to be there tomorrow (in South Korea) which will be interesting in and of itself.  Launching a nuke anywhere near where a U.S. VP will be is pure suicide.  He may be a crazy fat kid, but let's hope he's not a batsh**t insane fat kid.

There is no war going on in Korea right now. That's one big difference between it and Syria/Afghanistan. Striking there would be starting a whole new war where none existed.
The War that North Korea started in 1950 is still officially ongoing, despite a ceasefire being in place since 1953.

Launching a nuke anywhere near a US ally like ROK would be complete suicide for PDRK. Launching conventional weapons would be the same. Having Pence there just helps to emphasise that message.

I suspect that if China even suspects that fat boy might do something stupid they will 'step in' to 'help protect' North Korea, in other words they would invade and occupy North Korea, get fat boy to 'voluntarily' step down and put in a nuke free puppet North Korean government which will calm the situation down.

Interesting to note the tone of some of these replies, in this thread, other threads and elsewhere. "well military interventionism in the middle east is one thing, you can agree or disagree with that as strongly as you like. But attacking a commie government that's just unthinkable and stark raving mad! Dear god don't attack any reds, please dear god don't attack any commies, its just too dangerous! Please for your own good and all our lives, please don't hit the reds"

The left never seems to change.

Something was agreed to in FL.  Trump's new bromance with President Xi is a tell tale sign.  Trump can't keep something like that a total secret so he'll just shower Xi with praises because he can't reveal any more details.

The Chinese may have decided its time to intervene in the North Korean situation even if fat boy isn't planning on doing something stupid. They would just need a pretext and maybe Trump agreed to give them one.

Hopefully. This kid was raised his whole life being told that he's a God. The cult of personality surrounding him is incredibly powerful; with the NK people seeing him in the same vein as his paternal grandfather who he bears a strong physical resemblance to. I hope that he's not genuinely insane; but we'll see.

Whether he's sane or not, also realize that he probably knows that failing to hang onto absolute power is s death sentence. Push him into a no-win situation, and who knows what will happen.

Yeah, not wanting cities of 20-30 million people to be nuked or decimated with artillery is really insane. How dare the left!

... Then we need to "strongly guide" South Korea to establish an individualistic, constitutionally Christian, anti-Confucian unified American client state, establishing a beachhead of liberty on China's doorstep.

Constitutionally Christian ! ?
Why throw religion in here ? Very strange.
PS: Are you alt-right ? Related to Bannon ?
Korea is a country that has historically ranged from being part of China (Yuan dynasty) to being a client state of China (basically the rest of its existence before the 20th century), and this remains its destiny. Truthfully, North Korea's place in the world as an isolated nation dependent on China is actually more faithful to history than South Korea. This is an oft-unspoken part of the reason why China continues to shield North Korea - they're not merely a buffer state. Using cultural aspects of Christianity to establish a quasi-Western state is the only way to break Korea free from eternal servitude under China.

Imagine a unified, advanced, unapologetically pro-Western Korea, a country that the Chinese people consider to be "little brother", on the frontier of tyranny. China's leaders may be cruel, but they are wise and they pay very high deference to history and culture. They know the danger this would pose to their current regime, and this is why they often make knee-jerk reactions to cultural imports from Korea, while being comparatively lenient on Taiwanese cultural imports or excessively bourgeois domestic cultural products, which are consumed far more by most of the population.

Their leaders are smarter than ours. The only way we can win is if we turn their fears into reality.

China is definitely on pace to overtake the US. This site says they should pass us in about 10 years or so. Their projected GDP in 2050 (30 years from now) is almost 50 trillion.

https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/issues/economy/the-world-in-2050.html

There's definitely a chance they will collapse internally or the world as a whole could experience a collapse by then, though. If not, they will be top dog.

Does it really matter, though?

Ummm, a bold prediction. I think you will find China's economy is well on track to overtake the USA and grow more significantly in the coming decades. You cannot predict their economic growth rates.

The only thing that will stop China is if Trump does not pay the credit card bill of $4 Trillion he owes.

China is essentially controlling the USA financial system now through debt and exports alone.

As for the Chinese language invading North America, it will come as the economic interests of China grow.

Linguistically-speaking, it is impossible for Chinese--as it is--to spread as an international lingua franca. Sorry, but Beet is right here. Even with the nearly worldwide imperial dominance of English for centuries, it has still not been fully assimilated.

We don't have to worry about Chinese. Even if your foreign country scaremongering is true, Mecla, it will be generations before such a worldwide consensus language shift occurs, barring extremely exceptional circumstances.

Yes, you are probably right. A lot of people have a similar opinion:

http://www.chinasimplified.com/2015/04/03/will-speaking-chinese-future/

The main issue will be whether the Chinese are learning English in their own country.

But economic domination (extreme case) means the Chinese upper class moving to the USA and buying up the place, so they are likely to just keeping speaking Chinese whilst owning half of New York, Los Angeles and Seattle.
