What a sad blow to Italians' long-disappearing liberty of contract.

What a sad blow to Italians' long-disappearing liberty of contract.

When was Italy known for its "liberty of contract" (whatever that even means) exactly? Huh In the 15th century maybe?

But yeah, this is a bad idea.

I think it means, in an interesting interpretation of the world "liberty", that the powerful should have the freedom to exploit the weak.

Like a powerful union exploiting its power as a pressure group to prevent cheaper transportation?

cheaper transportation that is enabled by skirting around employment laws and that is contributing to the decline of secure and well paying employment. The unions are doing their job in protecting the vulnerable against the predators.

Right, because any opposition to Uber's employment practices makes me a Luddite.

Let's face it: Uber is terrible, but taxi drivers are terrible too and aren't exactly the epitome of the downtrodden, exploited workers that socialists should stand up for.

Yes, it's a classic dilemma: who do we hate more - the Silicon Valley creepy kids or the cartel of taxi thugs.  Surely there is a way both could lose?

And back then "liberty of contract" meant "sign this or be killed."

truly shocking to find out that Italian taxi drivers have way more power than they should have Roll Eyes  Were they needlessly violent during the debate too?

Yeah, I remember a while ago already there were incidents of Uber drivers being assaulted and cars being vandalized.

*shrugs* the medallion system/the taxi cartel is trash. Other companies can do the uber thing without being trash.

It's weird Uber gets so much attention and not AirBnB, the REAL problem thing that should be banned.

It's basically illegal in Finland as well (it's legal only if the driver has a taxi license).

Well, this is really not a big story - Uber's business model has big problems in most of western Europe.

When I got to Rome in December, I hired a "taxi" that ended up being the sketchiest ride of my life. Was really thinking about not paying the guy when I got to my hotel. I would rather see more Ubers because they have to meet at least some standard of quality, rather than foreign cabs that might just be some creep with a junk car.

A couple of taxis I took in Rangoon was literally falling apart. Interesting experience.
