No one gave a crap about religious clothing in France until 15 years ago or so.

It worked when France wasn't a multicultural and multireligious society that promotes liberal values of tolerance and acceptance. Now it's used as a weapon against religious minorities (i.e. Muslims) by the largely secular majority. It no longer protects France from political Catholicism, but is used to promote French nationalism.
