The business model is intensive at startup to assist drivers.

In Australia, they help you rent the car.

But once things are moving, excuse the pun, I think it could be a big winner.

The taxi industry in Perth has been decimated because of the previous crap service levels with overly expensive lifts from people who could not speak English.

They are taking a huge risk, but as a private company they can.

The risk is not that they are losing money, but why. They are spending money to rapidly expand into a much larger company, they basically want to spend all their money on expansion now, so they'll be so saturated and so big, when they hit an IPO it will be MASSIVE.

In was in Chicago last year and Uber only charged like $3.50 for an Uber pool ride anywhere in the city. I took at 30+ ride to a pizza restaurant, and even though I did share with someone else part of the way, it was a $7 round trip. It was awesome for me, a fraction of the cost of a cab, but I don't see how the driver or the company makes any money off that policy.

You should try Lyft, the progressive alternative. It's about the same price but you have the option of leaving a tip through the app.

I leave a tip automatically with my Uber account. IIRC that's the default option.
