The sponsor has 24 hours to begin advocating for this.

This is pretty simple. These are two measures that were introduced in European countries and that work quite well. Affordable housing is an issue that we have to address. It becomes harder and harder to find a decent place to live. This bill won't move mountains, but it is a small step into the right direction.

What is an "overstretched housing market"?

No definition needed because the implementation is up to the states. My definition of an overstretched housing market is an area in which high demand for houses and apartments leads to barely affordable prices and rents.

Nay

Sorry, can't get behind national rent controls. Hopefully the other members show up so we don't have this current crazy-lopsided vote.

I don't think this is a policy we should set at this level of government. I am also dubious on the practical effects of rent controls generally, which lead to shortages of supply and degradation of quality of the housing as well.

So therefore: NAY

This does have my support; I don't know if my vote would count as it would only replace Drew's positive vote in favour (effectively).

As simossad mentioned in his thread it would have been better if we could have discussed this more. I'd like to see the affordable housing issue come up again in the next session but I can't really support the idea of controlling rent prices and thus this bill as it stands.

Nay.

Egh this is a hard one (and I do see the controversy swirling around this), I like the idea of some rent controls (living in a 2 bedroom apartment myself in an urban area in Texas) but doing it a national idea may not be the correct thing to do, I'd like to see more regional control if this bill comes back up, which hopefully it will since there are basically no house bills in que, you could really just re-introduce this, if you wanted Smiley
