You know what, I'm not hating Kay Ivey so far. Already trying to reverse some of the horribly unethical things that the Bentley administration was doing. Ivey might be as good as we're going to get in Alabama.

Excellent news! Personally, I don't really care who runs, the result is probably similar no matter who wins (a very strongly conservative Republican), but I'm actively rooting against Mr. Corrupt Bargain Strange.

you're from this region, but I find it really doubtful that Kay Ivey would be scared by Roy Moore, and that may even get more established GOPers to pony up for her campaign.

Interesting - though I'm not sure I'd categorize Byrne as a new face (didn't he also run in 2010 as the sort of establishment candidate?)

A more relevant situation than Indiana and North Dakota would be Massachussets in 2010, since any Democrat who could potentially win this seat would ultimately lose in 2020.

a democrat win goes from 0% to 2% if Roy Moore wins the nomination. Moore only won election Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice by 3 points, in the same year Romney won the state by over 20 points. Moore is a major liability + Special Election Turnout being only voters who GIVE A RIP ABOUT ALABAMA + the fact Alabama voters are probably pissed about corruption (hopefully) + (hopefully) a talented Democratic candidate ala Folsom, Maddox, or even Sparks.

I had no idea this race was so crowded. I had thought that Strange was appointed and that he was going unchallenged!

even in Alabama, with the kind of shenanigans going on with his seat, too many people were not going to let this opportunity slip.

It might get strange into the run-off lol.

Roy Moore is much more authentically trumpian. Strange is just an impostor. I think the Trumpkins will see that and give Moore the nomination.

Roy Moore isn't like Trump.

Maybe not if you view Trump as someone with a set of coherent views. But if you see Trump is a culmination of all of the fringiest wings of the GOP, as we should because that's how he won the primary, then we should see Roy Moore's wacky theocratic bluster as perfectly in line with the three legged stool of the Trump appeal.

A lot of people who voted for Roy Moore in all those primaries, perhaps all of them even, voted for Trump because of similar reasons, they "tell it like it is".

Moore narrowly edges Strange in the first round

36% - Moore
33% - Strange
19% - Brooks
6% - Pittman
Some% - Others

Neither of these men winning anything beyond dog catcher is not a laughing matter - but honestly I'd prefer Moore because he'd be a serious pain in Mitch McConnell's neck. They are equally bad.

Any degree to which Strange is better is already beyond the point of where I could even tell a difference beyond tone or style.

Well, there we have it. Moore gets his and Pittman's voters, and Strange gets the balance. Result: Strange wins Runoff 54-46.

again.

why would brooks voters vote for Strange?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA BROOKS AN ESTABLISHMENT REPUBLICAN

i mean do you read what you're typing

Brooks is a Cruz-wing Republican who said that there was a "War on Whites". He primaried an incumbent. Brooks is anti-establishment, just as anti-establishment as Roy Moore.

Both are establishment republicans.

The term "establishment" means nothing if you are going to use it to refer to a member of the Freedom Caucus.

I have confidence in the sanity of the Alabama Republicans who did not vote for Moore or Pittman in the primary. While both Rs are terrible, Strange is clearly less terrible.

if you have confidence in Alabama Republicans you will always be disappointed.

Does anyone familiar with Moore know what people like about him so much? He doesn't strike me as a Trumpist. He's much more (no pun intended) ideological than Trump as well as clearly more religious. What confounds me is that Alabama went all in for Trump during the presidential primary, but appears to be poised to elect Roy Moore. Is it that Moore, like Trump, is more of a "personality" candidate?

you're implying that Trump is about anything other than white identity and white rage politics. He's not. Roy Moore is much the same.

Wow, another $1.2 million for Strange from Senate Leadership Fund and Chamber of Commerce.

https://twitter.com/rpyers/status/910607642371878913

wow, more money in the trash!

do these people not get it? they're backing a charisma black hole who has just as much potential to lose in the general election as literally Roy "reds and yellows" Moore.

Most Republicans in 2005 agreed with this, i'm sure. You notice how man whose skin is entirely snake oil Luther Strange won't even touch him on this topic?
