I'm not sure.  Could be "patriotism".  Could be they aren't in the top 20.  The last year I could get numbers for (I didn't Google hard, if someone wants to find newer numbers knock yourself out) was 2011.  There were 1,430,985 active duty.  Total deaths was 1,485, but 238 were illness, probably can't count those.  39 were murders, probably can't count those.  Sadly, 289 killed themselves.  I don't know if you count those.  That leaves accidents (424) and KIAs (456) and pending (22).

and my math brain ain't working this morning and I can't remember the exact formula needed.  902 countable deaths (not counting suicides or the others) out of 1,430,985 active duty is.....something like 63ish per 100,000?  idk, help me out here.

If my guess of 63 is right, it puts them right behind pilots at 64 and a head of roofers at 47.4.

The vast majority of military isn't active boots-on combat types and most deaths occur as a result of either car or motorcycle accidents, training accidents, or suicides.

Garbage men get run over and crushed in garbage crushing equipment.  Lawnmowers have lawnmowers roll over on them, they get run over, equipment breaks catastrophically.

0. POTUS. If 8 of 45 people have died on the job, that's a dangerous job.

Art has always been regarded as dangerous by those in power.

Just a guess, but perhaps some combination of the following factors:
sh**ttier cars that are less well maintained
more actual miles driven with less driver training
they get robbed, a lot, sometimes robberies go to sh**t
when they do get in an accident or shot, they don't have a direct line to the cops and other emergency services at the ready

Cause they spend more time in the "wrong side of town" than the cops do, and that's shocking cause out of all the professions you want in that place it should be the cops.

I think there is something to the idea that as much as the police are forced into dangerous situations, they're about as well-prepared for danger as a person possibly could be. Compared to cops, taxi drivers are pretty helpless.

Pilot is more dangerous than police officer?
many/most professional pilots aren't flying big, safe 7x7s and other big birds.  They are crop dusting or hauling mail in Alaska or renting their Cessna and skills out to rich hunters or teaching new pilots or etc.  Combine that with a bit of "you've got to be a little crazy to be a pilot" and there you go....

...though I suppose most of these jobs involve a little of "you've got be a little crazy to be a ______")

Aye, they are armed (with various arms) and trained on how to use them.  They are trained in first aid.  They are often in tense situations so are more likely to stay calm when things go tits up.  The aforementioned instant access to other emergency personnel.

We, at least in theory...there are always exceptions, prepare our cops as best we can for their sh**tty gigs, as we should.
