According to the Lt. Governor's Office, the special election to fill the seat will be on November 7.  Any primary would be on August 15.

Then there you have it, folks.

Good on them for aligning it with any fall elections UT might have

Matt Holland or Evan McMullin sound like best case scenarios here

Yeah, I want McMullin running as an Indy with Democratic support.

We have a few municipal elections, including the mayoral and city council elections for my own city (I live in a suburb of Salt Lake City).

The odd thing is that the filing deadline is before the day Chaffetz actually resigns.

Also my preferred choices would be McMullin, Matt Holland, and State Senator Deidre Henderson (a moderate establishment type). Provo Mayor John Curtis would also be interesting, as he's a moderate who ran for a state senate seat in 2000 as a Democrat.

My least favorite would be House Speaker Greg Hughes (a Trumpist, but who previously said no), and State Senator Margaret Dayton, who is an abrasive far-right jerk, and who once called the only Jewish member of the legislature a "clean air Nazi".

It seems that Dayton and Henderson are both in, and Curtis - still thinking.

Personally, as someone who wants a moderate "workhorse" and not a far-right "show horse" in the seat, I would oppose Dayton, and would favor Henderson, Curtis, or McMullin.

Matt Holland is the son of LDS apostle Jeffrey R Holland, president of Utah Valley University, and I do not know of any political views he has.

All that says is that you're morally bankrupt. McMuffin is the embodiment of the GOP's anti-peace, anti-poor agenda. He's a Romney-ite vampire and the Democrats should not associate with him just to get a 5% chance of gaining a Senate seat. Sad!

Still better than a generic R that would otherwise fill this seat.

The new United Utah Party is looking to run someone here. I wonder if McMullin will give it a shot.

Frustrated Utah Republicans, Democrats form new centrist political party

amen. the left embracing people like McMullin, who would savage the budget just as badly if even worse than Trump Republicans, would be a god damn tragedy.

I wish more states had local third parties that were successful down ballot like in VT.
Sounds like an American Macron party, maybe centrism is what we need. I wish them luck.

FWIW, I should add that Gass isn't morally bankrupt, but that kind of thinking is. That sounds more harsh than I meant it to be.
